Rebecca Harshbarger took us on her bus journey into Uganda’s deadly malaria zone. From Hell’s Kitchen, Marcella Veneziale wrote about a heavenly family-run bakery. Loren Bonner investigated allegations that new spa-like suburban hospital facilities are abandoning poor inner-city patients. And Damiano Beltrami told how tough times are forcing fortune tellers to study economic forecasting.

Those are some of the stories that have helped launch 219Magazine, the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism’s new online “Journal of Issues and Ideas.” The journal complements the award-winning NYCity News Service by showcasing the J-School’s longform work – primarily print, but also mini-documentaries and other longer multimedia packages. The name plays off the the J-School’s address: 219 W. 40th St., New York, NY.

219Mag publishes the best of our students’ narrative nonfiction, literary reportage, and participatory journalism. This includes regional, national, and international news features on the major issues of the day, investigative reporting, explanatory journalism covering business and economics, in-depth profiles, cutting-edge arts and culture coverage, travel stories, first-person pieces, and, yes, the occasional offbeat article such as Ben Fractenberg’s imaginatory piece on how American history might have been told via Twitter.
