Sun Sentinel offers editorial internships year-round for college students. Both paid and for academic credit. We have a strong program that includes mentors and training. Many of our former interns are now on the professional staff of the newsroom.

Paid intern positions are primarily in the summer and for 10 weeks, usually beginning the first week in June. Interns are paid at the rate of minimum wage, which as of July 2009 was $7.25 per hour. Reporters and photographers must have cars and are reimbursed for mileage, parking and tolls while on assignment. Internships are open to college students, preferably juniors, seniors, recent graduates and graduate students. The ideal candidate will have experience on a college publication and a previous internship. Ability to speak a second language and knowledge of South Florida also are valuable. We do expect interns from their first day to have the skills to perform their assigned job at the level of an entry-level journalist.

Paid Internships

Applications will be accepted through November 15, 2009 for Summer 2010. These 10-week paid internships will begin in early June 2010 for the following positions:

* News Reporters
* Business Reporter
* Copy Editor
* Page Designer
* Graphics Artist
* Photographer
* Online Producer

Applications will be accepted through March 1, 2010 for a 10-week paid internship that will begin in September 2010 for the following position: Sports Reporter

Academic Credit Internships

Editorial internships for academic credit are available. While a salary is not offered, Sun Sentinel will complete necessary paper work for school credit. Reporters and photographers who use personal vehicles for assignments will be reimbursed for mileage and parking. Academic credit internships are available year-round and are offered in most departments of the newsroom, including broadcast and online.

To Apply

To apply for a paid or academic credit internship, send a letter indicating your area of journalism interest, a resume and 7-10 work samples. If you have a permanent as well as a college address, please provide both. Reporting clips, photographs, graphics and illustrations should be mounted or photocopied on 8 1/2 by 11-inch paper. Photos and artwork may be submitted on slides, CDs or DVDs. We discourage candidates from sending any material that must be returned, as this is not always possible. In the selection process, preference is given to those who have experience in journalism. Applicants should have worked for their college publication or have had a previous internship.
