Brooklyn Independent Television
HEAD FIRST AND HANDS ON! In a nutshell, that’s the experience you can have as a Brooklyn Independent Television Apprentice this summer. Our Apprentices do far more than interns typically do…keep reading!
Brooklyn Independent Television (B.I.T.), is a community media program of BRIC Arts | Media | Bklyn, located in downtown Brooklyn. B.I.T. airs on the BCAT TV Network, airing in close to 500,000 homes in Brooklyn and beyond. B.I.T. produces a number of weekly, bi-monthly, and monthly programs covering public affairs, sports, health, business, the arts, plus a series focusing on an ever-growing number of Brooklyn neighborhoods. These programs are divided up among distinct production teams.
We’re looking for graduate students to spend time with us this summer. Apprentices will be assigned to work with one or two specific teams, and the position would include both of the following sets of responsibilities:
1) As a production assistant, helping the team’s producer and associate producer. Duties include research, logistical support, location shoots, logging and capturing footage, etc.
2) As a segment producer of one or more stories over the course of the semester. Duties would include some or all of the following: researching, producing, writing, editing, and reporting.
Here’s what one program participant had to say – after passing up an internship at CNN (!) to come to B.I.T., because of the chance to do so much hands-on work:
“B.I.T. gave me the opportunity to work on stories that were important to me, which I feel is essential for a young journalist in developing a voice. I was able to hit the streets and chase my story, and nothing felt better! I felt nurtured, but never spoiled. I was given time to develop my editing skills, my reporting skills, my communication skills, my writing skills and my producing skills.
B.I.T. has a rich set of programming. The programs tell the real stories of real people and the issues that affect them, and I truly feel proud that I spent my summer contributing to that.”
This is an opportunity to learn and participate in a real-life, real-time production unit…AND to come away with your own produced stories. Interested candidates should email a cover letter, resume, and links to samples of your video work. Please contact: Jonathan Lief, Assoc. Exec. Producer of Programming, at jlief@briconline.org
