Joanna Hernandez Elected UNITY VP
Joanna Hernandez, who is part of the Craft of Journalism faculty at the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism, has been elected vice-president of UNITY: Journalists of Color, Inc. She will be serving alongside newly elected president Barbara Ciara, chosen to complete the term vacated by Rafael Olmeda after he resigned as UNITY president this past week.
Ciara is the immediate past president of the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ); Hernandez was a board member of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ), where she served as a regional director. Their UNITY terms began on Oct. 10, 2009, and will run through Dec. 31, 2010.
UNITY:Journalists of Color is a strategic alliance advocating news coverage about people of color, and aggressively challenging its organizations at all levels to reflect the nation’s diversity. Representing more than 10,000 journalists of color, UNITY is comprised of the Asian American Journalists Association, National Association of Black Journalists, National Association of Hispanic Journalists, and the Native American Journalists Association.
