GLBT-Friendly Bar Facing Eviction, Fashion Week, Lots on The Local
It’s already been too long since the last note (my fault – the semester is flying by), so let’s get straight to business:
•Samantha Stark scored the front page of Gay City News with her story about a Crown Heights GLBT-friendly bar that’s facing eviction.
•Erin McCarthy’s piece about a spate of store robberies in Jamaica made the Queens Courier.
•Margaret Teich chronicled Fashion Week’s last stand in Bryant Park for WNYC.
•Megan Finnegan profiled prominent Rabbi Arthur Schneier, Sr. for Our Town.
•NBC Local Integrated Media was chock full of J-School bylines: Jonathan Balthaser wrote about some decidedly aged crates of alcohol left on ice a century ago by Antarctic explorer Ernest Shackleton and his crew; Erica Butler wrote about a student arrested in Queens for doodling on her desk; Krissy Dolor produced a follow-up piece on the ejection of chubby filmmaker Kevin Smith from a Southwest Airlines flight; Katie Honan wrote about Bruce Springsteen and a Midtown bar; Erica Soto penned a piece about Rush Limbaugh and Miss America.
•Over at the Daily News, Daniel Tucker shared a byline on an article about the sale of Tavern On The Green’s last remaining treasures, while Joe Tacopino wrote about Sarah Palin’s Tea Party debut.
•Lots on The Local, with contributions from Annie Byrnes, Carl Gaines, Kerri MacDonald, Andrea Swalec, and Vineeth Thomas adding to the growing mix.
•Mariana Vasconcellos contributed a post to The New York Times’ Lens blog about a photographer who chronicled the “counter Carnaval” found along Rio de Janeiro’s back streets. Recent graduate Valerie Lapinski offered a package about a photographer who – directly inspired by Gabriel Garcia Marquez – captured scenes of life in Colombia.
•Another recent grad, Joe Walker, penned an article for the Greenpoint Star about the City Reliquary’s financial troubles. The story is accompanied by a slideshow from the Class of ‘10’s Hannah Rappleye.
•In other alumni news, one of Ben Fractenberg’s capstone videos got picked up by Haaretz’s The Jewish World section. Rima Abdelkader, on assignment for Women’s eNews, covered the conviction of neuroscientist Aafia Siddiqui.
I want to take an opportunity to remind everyone to think about the News Service as you complete class assignments and/or come up with story ideas. Feel free to email me or stop by my office to make your pitch – or just to brainstorm about placement possibilities, which are growing all the time.
So congrats to all on the clips – and keep ‘em coming!
Cheers,
Jere Hester
