Some of nation’s leading business journalists and business leaders will be coming to the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism in October to take part in two major events.

On Oct.1 and 2, the J-School will host the Society of American Business Editors and Writers (SABEW) revived fall conference, Economy in Recovery. From Oct. 21-23, the School will welcome the second annual Getting Started in Business News conference in conjunction with the School of Mass Communications at the University of North Carolina.

At the SABEW gathering, the keynote speaker will be William Dudley, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Other sessions will include “Breaking News on Wall Street” with noted author Roger Lowenstein, securities firm analyst Brad Hintz, and New York Stock Exchange Chief Operating Officer Larry Liebowitz. Charles Gasparino of Fox Business News and Jonathan Weil of Bloomberg News will debate how well or poorly business journalists cover Wall Street. Other sessions are expected to feature top executives from Starwood Hotels, JetBlue, Wal-Mart, and Empire Blue Cross.

CUNY J-School students who are concentrating in business and economics will cover the conference for the CUNYatSABEW web site. Go to sabew.org to check out the full agenda, or contact Greg David, director of the CUNY J-School’s Business & Economics Reporting Program, for more information at greg.david@cuny.journalism.edu.

Later in the month, the Getting Started in Business News event will provide sessions on breaking into business journalism, deciding on the first job, using interactive tools, reading Securities and Exchange documents, working in broadcast news, and finding opportunities with new online business-to-business web sites.

The conference will attract aspiring business journalists from around the country and be valuable for first semester J-School students interested in the field. Interviews for summer internships with leading business publications will also be available.
