Rwandan Elections, Fashion Stylist, Small Business Help Centers
Welcome to the Class of ’11 – and welcome back to the Class of ’10! Here is some great weekend reading and viewing, courtesy of our hardworking reporters:
•Aash Jethra’s story about a couple of pioneering candidates running for office in Afghanistan made the front page of the Indian Express. (The Indian Express web site has been a bit balky lately – if the link isn’t working, the piece also can be found here at SikhNet.com.)
•Danny Gold worked on a video piece about the Rwandan elections for PBS NewsHour.
•Dale Eisinger, Hannah Rappleye, Sam Roudman, and Lisa Riordan Seville have stories in the latest issue of Overflow, the magazine Shane Dixon Kavanaugh oversees as managing editor. Check the issue out here.
•Dale teamed with Alana Casanova-Burgess and Eleanor Miller on this piece for City Limits about the educational challenges facing homeless children. The story is part of the Craft II Homeless With Homework project.
•Speaking of City Limits, Michael Cohen reported on the spate of suspected hate attacks on Staten Island.
•Margaret Teich helped put together this video about fashion stylist Rachel Zoe for Harper’s Bazaar.
•Samantha Stark contributed a video about a summer camp for aspiring writers to WNYC’s web site.
•Erin McCarthy’s story out of Santiago about the Chilean TV industry’s leap in the digital age made The Wall Street Journal.
•Over at the Daily News, Ines Bebea contributed a feature about help centers for small businesses. Bobby Melok wrote about how the Roger Federer trick-shot video is going viral. Joe Tacopino weighed in on the latest episode of “Mad Men.”
•Eugenia Miranda wrote a piece for NBC Local Integrated Media about a young man who moved using the subway.
•Colby Hamilton profiled state Senate hopeful Basil Smikle for Capital, a new site that reports on how things work in New York.
•Our Fort Greene team – Alexander Abad-Santos, Thomas Chan, Liza Eckert and Mitch Trinka – is wrapping up for the summer. Check out this photo and story that Thomas got from being at the wrong place at the right time. Meanwhile, Patrick Wall of the Class of ’11 contributed a story about a local school.
•Juan DeJesus wrote a couple of articles for the latest Mott Haven Herald, including a piece about a green moving company. The paper’s community editor, J-School alum Joe Hirsch, contributed several stories, including about one threats to local community gardens.
In other Alumni Corner news:
•Jenni Avins’ new site, Closettour.com, is online just in time for the run-up to Fashion Week.
•Marlene Peralta put together a spread about the Dominican community in New York for an AM New York special section about Latino life in the city. Copy and paste this link, and check out pages 15 and 16: http://longisland.newsday.com/gallery/galleries/amny/pdf/20100813.pdf
