New York Times Research Director Barbara Gray Joins Faculty to Oversee Research Instruction
Barbara Gray, director of news research for The New York Times, will join the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism faculty starting Monday, October 18.
She will oversee the School’s Research Center and will coordinate instruction in research methods at all levels of the curriculum. Her title will be Distinguished Lecturer and Interim Chief Librarian.
Gray is already well known to the School, having won rave reviews over the past two years as a research methods adjunct in the core Craft of Journalism I and II classes. She will continue to teach in her new role.
“I am honored to be a part the innovative program at the CUNY J-School, and motivated by the prospect of working with journalists and students to create a model curriculum of research methods for journalists to maintain high standards of accuracy and credibility across all media platforms,” Gray said.
Since 2007, Gray has directed a staff of six New York Times researchers in New York and Washington, D.C. who support a newsroom of more than 1,000 people. In that role, she has helped The Times shift to primarily utilizing electronic research resources, even while overseeing a news library of 40,000 books. She has also trained dozens of Times reporters and editors in the latest research tools and techniques.
Before that, she was a research assignment supervisor and research managing coordinator for Fox News Channel. She holds a master’s degree in Library Information Science from Long Island University and is a cum laude graduate of Adelphi University.
“At the CUNY J-School, we believe solid research skills are critical to excellent reporting and fact checking,” Dean Stephen B. Shepard said in announcing Gray’s appointment. “I am confident that Barbara’s years of hands-on newsroom experience will help us build a model research curriculum that will put our graduates at a competitive advantage.”
