Same-Sex Marriage Rulings Focus Spotlight on Prof. Richen’s Documentary
Richen, who teaches Video Documentary at the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism, wrote an opinion piece for CNN Living on June 26, the same day the Court issued its rulings. It struck down the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), extending U.S. government benefits to same-sex spouses in states where gay marriage is legal, and declined to decide a case from California, clearing the way for same-sex unions there.
The day before the Supreme Court acted, she spoke about “The New Black” on WNYC’s morning show, The Takeaway with John Hockenberry.
“The New Black,” has been widely acclaimed. Its latest honor was receiving the AFI Docs film festival’s audience award for best feature. The five-day festival, previously known as Silverdocs, played both Washington, D.C. and Silver Spring, Md. from June 19-23 as it screened 53 films from 30 countries.
