Janice C. Simpson spent almost three decades at Time magazine where she most recently served as an assistant managing editor, overseeing the magazine’s coverage of education, law, religion and lifestyle stories. From 1994 to 1997, she was the magazine’s deputy chief of correspondents, supervising 11 bureaus across the U.S. and coordinating reporting for major news stories including the Oklahoma City bombing, the capture of the Unabomber and the O.J Simpson trial. Her other positions at Time included stints as arts editor, New York bureau chief, writer in the World news section, and Mexico-based correspondent covering Central America. Before joining Time, she was a staff reporter for The Wall Street Journal. She has also worked at Essence, Ebony Jr!, and Woman’s Day and was a contributing editor to TheaterWeek magazine. She currently blogs twice a week about theater at the web site she created, Broadway & Me. She is a member of the Advisory Committee of the American Theatre Wing, which administers the Tony Awards, and a Tony voter as well as a member of the Outer Critics Circle and the Independent Theater Bloggers Association. She holds a B.A. in Liberal Arts from Sarah Lawrence College and was a Knight-Bagehot Fellow at Columbia’s Graduate School of Journalism, where she also served as a member of the editorial board of The Columbia Journalism Review.
