Yoruba Richen has been working as a journalist and documentary filmmaker for 10 years. Her documentary, “Promised Land,” about post-apartheid South Africa, was broadcast on the PBS series “P.O.V” in 2010. Most recently, Yoruba was a producer for “Live from Main Street” – a series of televised town hall events that took place in five cities and were broadcast on the satellite stations LINK TV and Free Speech TV as well as live-streamed on the web.
In 2007, Yoruba won a Fulbright award in film making and traveled to Salvador, Brazil, where she began production on “Sisters of the Good Death,” a documentary uncovering the origins of the oldest African women’s association in the Americas. Prior to that, Yoruba was a producer for the television and radio program “Democracy Now” with Amy Goodman, and spent four years as an associate producer in the investigative unit of ABC News. She has also been an associate producer for a number of films including the BET series “Biographies in Black” and the feature film “Brother to Brother”. Yoruba was co-producer of “Take it From Me,” a 2001 documentary exploring the effects of welfare reform on New York City women. Yoruba received a B.A from Brown University and Masters in City Planning from the University of California, Berkeley.
