The CUNY Graduate School of Journalism on Thursday launched The Nabe, a site that extends the experiment in collaborative hyperlocal journalism The New York Times began in March 2009 with the debut of The Local.

The Nabe shares the same goal as its predecessor site: to help residents of Brooklyn’s Fort Greene and Clinton Hill cover their neighborhoods, using the emerging tools of journalism to tell and share stories in compelling new ways.

These last four years have brought great change, not only to dynamic Fort Greene and Clinton Hill, but also to The Local. The CUNY J-School, which worked with The Times and the community from the start of The Local, took over day-to-day operations in January 2010, under the supervision of Times editors.

The Times, after vastly contributing to and gleaning lessons from The Local, has moved on. The CUNY J-School intends to keep the experiment going and growing.

In making a fresh start, the blog’s name – and location (The Nabe can be found at http://www.TheNabe.me) – has changed. But not its mission.

The faculty and students of the CUNY J-School are dedicated to making The Nabe a place where neighbors not only can come together to talk about anything via online forums, but also to contribute – as commenters, tipsters, writers, editors, crowdsourcing project participants, videographers and photographers.

Our reporters will cover the same mix of crime, school, political and arts news, as well as offer glimpses into the lives of local residents – and their pets. But we’re also here to help residents cover the neighborhood – with everything from write-ups of community board meetings to videos of school concerts to pictures of soccer games in the dust bowl in Fort Greene Park.

In the meantime, hope to see you soon, in The Nabe.

A post on the TIME site described the No. 6 website pick as follows: “At a time when the percentage of articles longer than 2,000 words in national newspapers has plummeted, Narratively sets a different theme each week and publishes one in-depth local story a day around that idea. Its strategy is designed to “slow down the news cycle” and focus on stories about people you don’t hear about every day—from female taxi drivers to a gay male escort. Text is broken up by bold, full-screen images and mini-documentaries to take full advantage of the innovative possibilities of Internet storytelling.”

Narratively got its start with the help of $6,500 in seed funding from the CUNY J-School’s Tow-Knight Center for Entrepreneurial Journalism along with nearly $54,000 raised in a Kickstarter campaign.

Knight Journalism Fellowship at Stanford University for the 2013-14 academic year. She is one of 12 U.S. journalists and innovators to receive this prestigious honor, joining eight international fellows from such countries as Myanmar, Venezuela, Germany, and China.

During her fellowship, Nessa, former deputy managing editor of editorial products and innovations at the Associated Press in New York, will be working to develop “tools to help the public understand data visualizations and heighten visual literacy in news and media outlets.”

Other fellows will work on improving accuracy in reporting on Islam, raising the profile of indigenous perspectives on the news, engaging citizens in local food coverage, and getting news quickly to communities hit by disaster. They also will be developing tools to help journalists create high-quality animated editorial cartoons, blog live on mobile platforms, gain relevant coding and data skills, and better connect with millennials and the changing U.S. demographic.

“This group of U.S. Knight Fellows is easily the most diversified ever, with fellows coming from daily newspapers, online publications, tech companies, and even an academic institution,” said Knight Fellowships Director James Bettinger. “This wide range of backgrounds and specialties reflects the variety and depth of expertise and commitment that journalism needs right now.”

Among the benefits fellows receive during the 10-month program are a $65,000 stipend, paid Stanford tuition, and a housing allowance.

Class of 2013

For the second straight year, students in the CUNY J-School’s Radio News Writing and Reporting class took the stage at nearby dive bar Tobacco Road to hone their storytelling chops. The event is inspired by the Moth series, with each student tasked with telling a five-minute story with no notes.

Kathleen Culliton told the story of a study abroad fling in Italy that ended awkwardly, new dad Jordan Davidson reminisced about the agonizing choice of picking a name for his daughter, and Bobbi Misick told a heartwarming story about her home country Turks and Caicos and her complicated relationship with one of its most popular foods, conch.

Radio instructor Alex Goldmark opened the festivities by discussing the inauspicious start to his radio career as a stringer for NPR in Brazil. Another highlight of the evening was a visit from Julie Polk, a veteran storyteller. She ended the night with a wild story about life on the road in a traveling Shakespeare troupe, and a performance that went haywire–complete with a costume malfunction and near-concussion.

Julie Polk was a guest storyteller at the CUNY J-School’s second annual Storytelling Night. (Photo by Lauren Rothman, ’13)

The assignment challenges students to think about structure and pacing. In preparation for the event, veteran Moth storyteller Jim O’Grady visited the class and encouraged students to pick a story with “a clear beginning, middle, and end.”

By the end of the evening, 11 students took the stage, and their stories were recorded for future air on local radio stations.

Instructor Amanda Aronczyk’s section of Radio News Writing and Reporting will also take the stage at Tobacco Road on Monday, May 6 at 5 p.m. All are welcome to attend.
