NYC Community News Service

The best of students' bylined work will be made available to New York City media outlets on a daily basis through the NYC Community News Service, operated by the Graduate School of Journalism. Many New York neighborhoods do not receive much journalistic attention, and our students, many of whom live in these communities, will bring enthusiasm and local savvy to the task.

These neighborhood stories will be fed via the Internet to news organizations, available for use by local media outlets, including community newspapers, local broadcast stations, wire services, and Internet service providers. The service will serve both as an outlet for students' work and as a graphic example of how print, broadcast and online techniques are converging in the multi-media news desk of the future.

The news service will be overseen by professional editors and faculty members. In each semester, students who have demonstrated strong reporting skills can sharpen their craft by working at least one day a week at the news service. These students will serve as a corps of reporters, editors, and web-page designers for the news service. To participate in this three-credit elective workshop, students will need permission from their faculty advisor and the Dean. Students who take this course will be exempted from one of the required media courses.

Students who take the workshop are expected to read daily newspapers, major news Web sites, and all of the news services' coverage, so they are prepared for any stories the editors assign. They also will meet one hour a week with a faculty member to discuss issues that arise from the experience.
