Here are some of the latest:

  • H’Rina DeTroy wrote about how women in the Sudan are using a secret code to subvert the insidious practice of female genital mutilation. You’ll find her piece on The Huffington Post.
  • Jenni Avins’ brief about a new mural at Houston and Bowery made New York Magazine.
  • Joe Walker, writing for City Hall news, profiled a darkhorse City Council candidate who notched Local 1199’s endorsement.
  • Kate Zhao wrote a piece for the Dow Jones Newswire about a plan to help make the Empire State Building a little greener.
  • Check out some of the photos taken for The Local by middle schoolers trained by Kristen Joy Watts. Some of the pictures also made yesterday’s Metropolitan section of The New York Times. Meanwhile, Mike Reicher produced this video, reported by two of the high school students he helped train last month.
  • Sandra Roa worked on this NYTimes.com video about an Argentinean man’s battle against a drug called paco.
  • Our latest example of J-School teamwork: Rachel Senatore, Alana Rigal and Brigid Bergin (’07) combined on this WNYC post about pizza ovens.
  • Valerie Lapinski reported, produced and edited this Time.com video about a Brooklyn hair salon that’s donating proceeds from Farrah Fawcett-inspired hairdos to help domestic violence survivors.
  • Damiano Beltrami shared a byline on this Jordan Times story about Jordan’s efforts to improve science training.
  • Ben Fractenberg put together this audio slideshow package for Haaretz about the Ofra settlement on the West Bank.
  • Mark Morales wrote a piece for NBC Local Integrated Media about a way to Twitter prayers for placement in the Western Wall. Emily Feldman, meanwhile, wrote about some tough requirements for astronauts in the Chinese space program.
  • Kate Nocera shared a byline on this sad story about a 5-year-old boy who died a day after the Jet Ski accident that also killed his father. You’ll find her article in the Daily News.
  • Jessica Simeone shared the byline on this New York Post story about a math problem to chew over.

  • Valerie Lapinski was the reporter for this Time.com video piece about wind power.
  • Alana Rigal shared a byline with Brigid Bergin (’07) on this WNYC story about the Brooklyn building collapse.
  • Speaking of the building collapse: Kristen Joy Watts snapped a picture of the aftermath for The Local, while Jim Flood wrote a follow-up story, as did Mike Reicher, who found the contractor didn’t have proper permits for the work reportedly being done.
  • The Straphangers Campaign gave the R train an F — for Filthy, Jessica Simeone reported for the New York Post.
  • Kate Nocera wrote about the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots for the Daily News.
  • Speaking of the Daily News, Damiano Beltrami and Nick Loomis’ story about struggling immigrant day laborers being forced to cut back on wiring money home to Ecuador made the made the paper’s Queens section. You’ll find Nick’s accompanying audio slideshow on the News Service.
  • Xiomara Martinez-White wrote about one of last week’s celebrity deaths – Farrah Fawcett – for People.com.
  • Mark Morales wrote for NBC Local Integrated Media about how Time magazine rushed out a special edition commemorative Michael Jackson issue. Emily Feldman also contributed a sidebar to the Jackson coverage.
  • Marcella Veneziale interviewed the national PTA president for Parenting.com.
  • Nicholas Martinez was the lead researcher for this NBC News piece about former President George H.W. Bush’s latest skydiving adventure.
  • Tim Persinko covered a protest by Iranians in Britain for The Independent.

  • The J-School made a nice showing in the Sunday papers on June 29. Damian Ghigliotty’s feature on dying funeral homes in Queens got great play in the Times’ City section. Meanwhile, Barry Paddock’s first-person piece story about his newsworthy landlord woes merited a whole page in the Daily News.
  • Stephen Bronner’s been very busy for the Queens Courier. His latest clip is a city sidewalks piece that had its origins in Prof. Diaz’ class.
  • Claudia Cruz got the quote of the week when she asked actress Michelle Rodriguez about her troubled past. “No soy una muchacha rastrera!” (“I am not a lowlife!”) Rodriguez told Claudia – giving the editors at Diaro Libre their headline.
  • Matt Townsend shared a byline in this Pro Publica piece about a political fundraising firm whose practices have draw questions.
  • Abi Ishola’s audio story on budget retailers’ forays into high fashion made the News Service.
  • A sweet tooth trumps a sour economy, Joshua Cinelli found for the Daily News in a story sure to bring smiles to the faces of candy store owners – and dentists – everywhere.
  • Danny Teigman has a more sobering economic story for Newsday about how the Midwest floods could lead to food cost hikes in New York.
  • Before you spend your hard-earned $11 to see Diminished Capacity, check out Henry Stewart’s review in The L Magazine.
  • You can see the Waterfalls installation for free. For a preview, check out a slideshow produced by Linnea Covington for New York Press.
  • While New York has the Waterfalls, Point Reyes, Calif. has the Sun Festival baby blessing. Clark Merrefield has the details in the Point Reyes Light.
  • Francesca Levy’s story about a GMAT cheating scandal made BusinessWeek.com’s homepage.
  • Carl Winfield also has been busy for BusinessWeek. Check out his slideshow on how rising oil prices are having an impact on costs of various petroleum-based products – everything from asphalt to plastic bags.
  • It’s also proving a productive summer for our alumni: Dan Carty’s exclusive on J. Edgar Hoover’s hatred for columnist Art Buchwald made cbsnews.com, and was picked up in many places – including The Washing Post, Buchwald’s old paper. Dan put in his request for Buchwald’s FBI file when he started the story in Prof. Lehren’s Investigative Reporting class.
  • Never let it be said that Dmitry Kiper doesn’t suffer for his art. He turned an unexpected punch in the face into a first-person piece for NY Press.
  • Brigid Bergin’s multi-media package about Lower East Side artists who are using their creativity to stay in the changing neighborhood made WNYC.

  • Two of our reporters scored solo bylines in the Times this week: Mathew Warren covered the funeral of a Queens soldier that combined elements of the young man’s Buddist background with U.S. military ceremony. And Carolyn Nardiello wrote about vintage car buffs on Long Island who are keeping the tradition of “cruise nights” alive.
  • David Chiu was a busy man, publishing two “Critic’s Picks” in New York magazine here and here as well as a short profile for the New York Resident of a Dylan- and Warholian-era figure who sounds like she came right out of the movie “Almost Famous”.
  • Annaliese Griffin wrote a great profile of eccentric “Bad Lieutenant” director Abel Ferrara for The Reeler.
  • Kate Pastor held NYCHA’s feet to the proverbial fire in a City Limits piece about how new flexibility in federal funding regulations may mean a hit for Section 8 rent subsidies.
  • Dan Rivoli wrote about a century-old great-grandmother who seems to have packed in about 200 years of living in this Daily News story. He also contributed to this fun political piece on which presidential candidates are shaping up as Halloween favorites.
  • Dorian Davis revealed how the city is clamping down on its controversial practice of allowing architects to self-certify building plans in this article for Architectural Record.
  • Danny Massey was there as the ousted principal of Brooklyn’s new Arab language school broke her silence and revealed she had reapplied for her job. He published the piece in Newsday.
  • Brigid Bergin covered the Asian Harvest Moon Festival in Flushing for the Daily News.
  • Andy Hawkins, writing for City Hall, was on the union beat this week: He chronicled the fight to start a union at the mayor’s media firm, Bloomberg LP, and described the cold war between the mayor and the PBA.
  • Annie Shreffler wrote about a community push to make sure that jobs generated by retail stores planned for the Kingsbridge Armory pay a living wage. Check out her lead piece in the Norwood News.
  • Matt Townsend and Barry Paddock helped fill the pages of The Villager this week. Matt wrote about community cries to restore the old LaGuardia Bath House and about how a stalled, partially completed construction project on the lower East Side has brought vermin and chased away business. Barry’s piece — about a lower East Side shop makes “designer” doughnuts, is guaranteed to bring out the Homer Simpson in you (well, at least in me).
  • In another story with Meet-the-Editors-night origins, Kathryn Lurie described merchants’ distress over how new, wider bike lanes on a stretch of Ninth Ave. are taking away parking spaces – and chasing away business. Check out her article in Chelsea Now.
  • Long story (not-so) short: Amanda Michel, who runs Off the Bus, a Huffington Post offshoot dedicated to using citizen journalists to help cover the presidential campaign, attended Prof. Jarvis’ conference and spoke with me (among others), about getting our reporters involved. An opportunity came up this past Saturday and Daniel Macht answered the call. The story he contributed to can be seen here. Here are the reports Dan and others filed. A story – about the story – made the Christian Science Monitor.
  • Here’s a birthday shoutout to Manny Jalonschi who is marking the release of the latest issue of Beyond Race magazine, where he serves as deputy editor. He also wrote profiles of Brooklyn Councilman Charles Barron and Tommy Chong (Cheech’s old partner).

  • Heather also was busy at the Daily News where she contributed to Sunday’s front page story on a murder-suicide, and wrote a piece on plans to make the new Yankee Stadium friendly to wheelchair users.
  • Dan Carty scored the cover of the News’ business section with these stories on environmental-based small businesses. Here’s the sidebar.
  • Matt Sollars captured some powerful emotions in this piece about a soldier who was posthumously granted citizenship.
  • Danny Massey chronicled the calls to reinstate the principal of the Khalil Gibran Academy in Brooklyn. His article ran in Newsday.
  • Brigid Bergin checked out the wild life around Jamaica Bay — and got a Daily News clip for her efforts.
