Ines Bebea and Azriel James Relph combined on a video piece about tough times for holiday toy drives, while H’Rina DeTroy offered a video story about a Bronx-based program that trains folks for green jobs.

Some examples of the J-School alumni network at work: Kate Nocera shared by a byline on this Daily News fire follow-up story with Barry Paddock (’08). Mark Morales got co-billing with Barry on this murder story.
Speaking of our alumni network, congratulations to the Class of ’09! And kudos to the Class of ’10 on completing the first semester.

So have a happy and safe holiday – and keep those stories coming!

We’re in the homestretch and the stories are coming in at a rapid pace. Here are some of the latest:

Alexander Abad-Santos and Peggy Truong covered a pet store protest for The West Side Spirit.

Erin McCarthy’s videos about the impact of the recession in the South Bronx were picked up by The Bronx Times.

Eleanor Miller’s article chronicling complaints against a Murray Street bar was featured in The Tribeca Trib.

Shane Dixon Kavanaugh’s piece about a marathon runner from Oregon with a great comeback story made the Eugene Weekly. (Note that’s Kavanaugh with a “K” – not a “C” as I blundered last week. Mea culpa.)

Matt Robinson’s story about an Albanian celebration in the Bronx made the Daily News (see attached pdf). Meanwhile, Kate Nocera scored an exclusive interview with a shooting victim, and Mark Morales shared a byline on a Cyber Monday story.

Megan Finnegan’s story and audio slideshow about a women’s chorus in New Jersey made The Local. Speaking of The Times, Damiano Beltrami’s video profile of an art therapist was featured on the paper’s website, while Kristen Joy Watts wrote a post and produced an audio slideshow about geologist and photographer Roger Ballen for The Lens blog.

Sergey Kadinsky wrote about Sarah Palin’s reaction to the President’s Afghanistan plan for CBS News.com.

Aisha Al-Muslim’s video piece about the travails of street vendors made the News Service (it’s a version of a story first seen on “219 West.”) Meanwhile, H’Rina DeTroy, Karina Ioffee, Mark Morales, Nicholas Martinez, Alana Rigal, Jessica Simeone and Sophia Tewa contributed to a package of stories and audio slideshows about the state of parking in the city.

Emily Feldman wrote about how to deal with odd MetroCard balances for NBC Local Integrated Media, while Maya Pope-Chappell contributed a piece about the end of “Monk.”

In his latest post for True/Slant, Michael Preston weighs in on the end of school, the end of the decade and the future.

This clip may look familiar, but it’s well worth another read. That’s because Carla Murphy’s two-part series for Women’s eNews about the inequities girls face in school sports support earned first-place honors in the education category for the Ippies Awards, handed out by the New York Community Media Alliance.

Congrats to all – and keep ‘em coming!

Carla Candia, meanwhile, wrote about the day laborers who congregate on E. 141st St. and Jackson Ave.

The stories are piling up faster than autumn leaves – it’s getting hard for me to keep up. Here are some of the latest efforts:

Damiano Beltrami’s story about a teenager cleared of a robbery thanks to a Facebook status alibi hit The New York Times trifecta: The front page of the New York section, the City Room blog and The Local. The story also got picked up by the AP and a ton of other media outlets.

Speaking of The Local, Kerri MacDonald covered a debate over whether rooming houses should be allowed in South Orange. Ines Bebea wrote about a $25,000 prize awarded to Fort Greene’s Myrtle Avenue Revitalization Project. Valerie Lapinski’s piece about a photographer who chronicled life in a Hong Kong public housing complex made The Times’ Lens blog. Nick Loomis, meanwhile, put together a package on sports photography for Lens, and Kristen Joy Watts co-produced an audio slideshow for Lens featuring the work of the chief photographer for The Times’ Neediest Case Fund series.

Michael Cohen’s essay about graduating college during a recession made The Nation.

The latest edition of “219 West,” which airs on CUNY TV, features stories by Rima Abdelkader, Aisha Al-Muslim, John De Petro, Geneva Sands-Sadowitz and Brian Winkowski. The show should be posted online here in the coming days.

Joel Schectman shared a byline on a Daily News front-page story about college students struggling with high school-level math. Kate Nocera wrote an article about how rocker Ryan Star put out-of-work New Yorkers in a music video. Mark Morales contributed to a story about the accidental death of a popular drummer. Karina Ioffee got nice play in the Your Money section with her feature on recycling e-waste.

Lots of news coming out of the Bronx: The new issue of The Hunts Point Express features contributions by Maria Clark, Azriel James Relph and Sandra Roa (I have a copy of Sandra’s story and photo spread – come on by for a look). The latest Mott Haven Herald boasts stories by Carla Candia, Jeanmarie Evelly, Sergey Kadinsky and Lindsay Lazarski.

The runner stumbles: I inadvertently neglected to mention last week that Krissy Dolor contributed to the News Service’s marathon package. Meanwhile, both Erica Soto and Janet Lawrence placed marathon pieces on websites.

Sherry Mazzocchi’s story about the effort to save Stella Maris High School made The Queens Courier. Meanwhile, the paper published Perry Santanachote’s story about the bid to attract younger veterans to a Queens VFW post. (Come on by my office for a look at the piece.) Almudena Toral’s article about the graduation of a Latino youth military cadets group made El Correo de Queens, the Courier’s Spanish-language edition.

Liza Eckert’s article about a vigil held by gay marriage advocates made the Queens Chronicle.

Michael Preston tackles the Murdoch-Google battle for True/Slant.

Maya Pope-Chappell’s story about a new life for a nightspot named Death & Co. made NBC Local Integrated Media’s New York site. Meanwhile, Emily Feldman wrote about a Sesame Street 40th anniversary ceremony.

Jessica Simeone shared a byline on a New York Post story about the city’s slowest bus lines.

Eleanor Miller contributed to the Tribeca Trib’s Yankees parade cover.

Congrats to all – and keep ‘em coming!

Hope everybody enjoyed the weekend’s extra hour. Here are some of our latest examples of time well spent:

The reporters in our Interactive Fundamentals sections fanned out around the city, Flip Video cameras in hand, and asked dozens of New Yorkers: “Tell us one way the recession has changed your life.” The results of the video vox pop are plotted out on a Google map. The hits already are starting to roll in, through both the News Service site and YouTube. Thanks to all the reporters and professors involved. Special shoutouts are due to Drew Geraets, Collin Orcutt and Kristen Joy Watts who made the map presentation come to life.

Kieran Meadows spent his summer as a Carnegie Fellow with the Brian Ross Investigative Unit at ABC. The piece he worked on – a “Harvest of Shame”-style expose of the use of children as fruit pickers – hit the ABC trifecta last week, with segments on “Good Morning America,” “World News with Charlie Gibson” and “Nightline.” ABCnews.com also ran a print story – co-written by Angela Hill (’07), our first Carnegie Fellow. It looks like the Ross story already is having an impact.

Joel Schectman’s report about fears that U.S. satellites might be vulnerable to attack made BusinessWeek.

Joe Walker broke into The New York Times’ Metro section with his story about a developer who was barred from selling apartments in New York State. David Montalvo, writing for the New Jersey branch of The Local, profiled a Millburn township committee candidate, while Lois DeSocio wrote about new lacrosse nets for Memorial Park.

Page 18 of last Monday’s Daily News was a J-School affair. Maria Clark, Mark Morales and Kate Nocera’s bylines popped up on different stories.

It’s a version of a longer story she did for “219 West,” which now can be found online.

In you missed last week’s live webcast of “The Aerial View,” produced by Mark Morales, Rachel Senatore and Jessica Simeone, no worries: you can catch the show here.

Here are some stories that will make for some fine viewing and reading on a holiday weekend:

Shoutouts are due on the premiere of 219 West, the new monthly TV news magazine produced out of the J-School and broadcast on CUNY TV. In the election-themed debut show, producers Geneva Sands-Sadowitz and Brian Winkowski examined the financial health of the city and efforts to diversify the economy. Rima Abdelkader took an intimate look at mounting a first-time campaign. Nicole Turso profiled the youngest member of the City Council and Alana Rigal introduced us to some unorthodox mayoral candidates. Aisha Al-Muslim and John DePetro served as anchors. The show, which first aired Wednesday, will be repeated on Channel 75 Saturday at 8 p.m., and Sunday at 10 a.m. If you miss 219 West on the tube, don’t worry – the show should be online soon.

Sophia Tewa and Jessica Simeone’s video-and-print package on the hot costume – Michael Jackson – of a not-so-hot Halloween season can be found on the News Service. The video also is making a splash on YouTube.

Another example of J-School teamwork: Mark Morales and Barry Paddock (’08) combined on a Daily News story about a bloody brawl in Harlem. Maria Clark, meanwhile, wrote about a Bronx-inspired soda company.

Eleanor Miller’s feature about bringing the Bard to the Boardwalk found a home in The Brooklyn Rail.

Sandra Roa’s story and photo spread/slideshow about a new urban oasis known as Concrete Plant Park are featured in The Hunts Point Express. Azriel James Relph covered the Uptown Girl Power! awards for the paper. (Scroll down the homepage a tad to find both pieces.)

Kieran Meadows and Mike Reicher’s story about the dispute over whether Superfund money should be used to clean the Gowanus Canal made Crain’s New York Business. Feel free to drop by my office to read a copy of the article.

Meanwhile, Mike’s article about plans to lop off the top two floors of the old Corn Exchange Bank Building in Harlem was published in The New York Times’ New York section. More Times news: Joe Walker’s piece about Pratt closing its campus to the public was featured in paper’s Local blog, as was Samantha Stark’s coverage of a citywide high school fair held at Brooklyn Tech. Valerie Lapinski contributed a package to The Times’ Lens blog about a photographer who chronicled the travels of the Van Gujjar tribe of northern India.

Sergey Kadinsky’s story about top scientists who were awarded medals by President Obama made CBSNews.com.

Liza Eckert contributed a sweet recipe and even sweeter item to BUST magazine. (See attached pdf.)

Xiomara Martinez-White’s brief about Nancy Grace’s clash with Jon Gosselin made TheFrisky.com.

Proof you should always carry a camera: a picture of a protest snapped by Erica Soto as part of a Daybook assignment was picked up by the website of Shambhala Sun, a Buddhism culture magazine.

Emily Feldman wrote about the debut of new MTA boss Jay Walder for NBC Local Integrated Media. Meanwhile, Maya Pope-Chappell shared a byline on the site’s spot news story about President Obama’s Nobel Peace Prize win.

Congrat to all – and keep ‘em coming!

Kristen Joy Watts’ story and slideshow featuring the work of a photographer who chronicled life in a Bucharest children’s oncology ward made The New York Times’ Lens blog.

Writing for the Times’ Local blog, Mike Reicher examined whether federal stimulus funds will be used to jump-start a development in Downtown Brooklyn.

Maria Clark sat on the other side of the camera for an interview on BronxTalk, during which she and Prof. Stein spoke about the Mott Haven Herald. Maria also contributed to this Daily News story about the hunt for a serial rapist.

Speaking of the Daily News, Kate Nocera shared a byline on this front-page story about the probe into an alleged terror plot.

In our alumni corner, Rebecca Harshbarger wrote about deadly riots in Uganda that erupted over some men’s anger about women wearing trousers. You’ll find her story in Women’s eNews.

Linnea Covington’s feature article about a 76-year-old roller-skating guru was published by New York Press, after being featured on our 219 Magazine site.
