Job Opportunity: Black Media Initiative Director

BLACK MEDIA INITIATIVE DIRECTOR for the Center for Community and Ethnic Media at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY 

The Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism seeks candidates for the position of Black Media Initiative Director for its Center for Community and Ethnic Media, to begin in the fall of 2019. The application deadline is August 15, 2019.

The center is pivoting from a New York-oriented service organization to one committed to building news organizations that inform immigrant communities and communities of color across the U.S. The Black Media Initiative will be one of the main pillars of the center’s new structure. 

The successful candidate will have strong media credentials, extensive experience in the field of black media, and demonstrated management and leadership expertise. The position will report to the executive director of CCEM, which is based in New York City. 

The director will help design and launch the initiative; find strategies to support business development in the black news industry; help with grant seeking and reporting, research, and training; and develop and nurture collaborative relationships with other partners in key locations across the country. The director will also be expected to work collaboratively with Newmark J-School staff who are developing programs that intersect with the work of CCEM and the Black Media Initiative. 

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants should have an intimate knowledge of and connections with the black media sector, experience working with journalism funders, management experience, and deep understanding of the journalism and business skills required of small, independent news outlets. 

A preferred candidate should have: 

  • At least three years’ experience working on the business or editorial team at a news organization 
  • Understanding of the latest trends in the news industry, including product development, audience development, new forms of storytelling, and new business models 
  • Demonstrated commitment to informing, engaging, and fostering news organizations that serve black communities. 
  • Experience soliciting and managing major grants
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate with others for the good of the institution

COMPENSATIONThe Black Media Initiative Director is a grant-funded position that will be on the payroll of the CUNY Research Foundation, which offers a competitive compensation and benefits package.
