LGBTQ+ Media Mapping Project
The Center for Community Media, in partnership with the Local Media Foundation, the John T. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, and the News is Out LGBTQ+ collaborative, is proud to present the first report of local LGBTQ+ owned outlets across the U.S.
This map includes 105 outlets in 33 states and Washington D.C. The map includes verified local media outlets that responded to a comprehensive survey, and unverified local outlets that are publishing content but didn’t respond.
The map and report represent a 9-month effort to research, document, survey and analyze the state of LGBTQ+ media. This type of information has never been publicly available.
We did months of research to find these outlets, and asked multiple experts from both publishing and marketing for their input. Some of those surveyed had stopped publishing, or could not otherwise be verified.
The vast majority of local LGBTQ+ media are small, for-profit, and majority LGBTQ+ owned. About 60% produce both print and online content, though most newer media are online only.
There are huge geographic gaps in who is served, as most LGBTQ+ media are urban, and there are many states that have no known LGBTQ+ original-reporting local news media organizations. Most LGBTQ+ media are also owned by white, cisgender gay men, although there is far more diversity in ownership and management than 30 years ago.
This map serves as a powerful database and research tool for funders, advertisers, researchers, and journalists to better engage and understand LGBTQ+ communities.
