This is a course in listening to and engaging a community and understanding and empathizing with its needs. . We will explore the fundamental concepts of engaged, social journalism, and use a variety of different listening and engagement tools and strategies. We will also draw upon disciplines from outside of journalism such as anthropology, public health, and community and political organizing. We will also explore different ways of delivering information that go beyond writing stories.
The course will draw on the curriculum from the social journalism program. Students should have some ideas about a community they might like to serve, ideally related to their subject concentration or the local community district they have been working in.
Students will also have the opportunity to work with the The City’s Open Newsroom project in this course. This year-long project in three Brooklyn neighborhoods features a series of events that aim to make local news more collaborative.
