Students in this Advanced Reporting and Writing course cover subject, not geographic, beats, in a section of the South Bronx where stories about undercovered populations abound. Students experience the thrills and rigor of real-world reporting as they face the demands of filling two monthly 12-page newspapers, The Mott Haven Herald and the Hunts Point Express, and their news websites. Content is welcomed in print, audio or video, and all students will have the opportunity to sit in the editor’s chair for a week, under the wing of Editor Joe Hirsch. It’s a great opportunity to generate clips and links – and have the experience of being a staff reporter for a well-respected local news organization. By semester’s end, the class will jointly produce at least one in-depth package on an issue impacting the Bronx in 2020.
