In this living laboratory module, we’ll focus on making new use of developing platforms and tools to create innovative journalism products and services. Each session will include hands-on demonstrations, experiments, games, challenges and debates.
We’ll tackle questions about the best ways for newsrooms to use Snapchat, Whatsapp, Line, Kik, and Viber for information gathering and news distribution. We’ll wrestle with how algorithmic reporting, i.e. bots that write news stories, are impacting journalism, and we’ll experiment with ways to turn bots into creative tools for quality journalism. We’ll also examine how Alexa, Google Home and other new services can provide valuable inputs for creative journalism, and look at how these new tools and technologies can lead to new models for sustainable journalism ventures. You’ll come away with experience using, thinking about and developing ideas for next-generation journalism technology.
