In this class, students will work on applying their reporting skills to long-form documentary storytelling. They will analyze the building blocks and visual demands of documentary, develop and pitch a story idea and build their camera skills. Students will do this through watching and analyzing documentaries of various lengths as well as reading and writing about them. Students will also complete short production exercises that will explore different elements of documentary filmmaking, and will leave the class with a viable documentary film idea. The class is designed as a prerequisite to the fall documentary production class where students will complete their film projects.
