The use of Live video has exploded in the last year among the major media brands. From breaking news to innovative storytelling to event coverage live video streams are ubiquitous for video journalists.
This five-week module will explore how live is currently being used by journalists and will train students to produce their own live streams on Facebook and Instagram.
The focus of course will be how live streaming is different from standard live TV broadcasts. It will stress the interactive nature of live streaming. Facebook reports that live videos are watched 3 times longer than other videos on the platform and receive 10 times the number of comments.
It will also also explore how the technology is changing video journalism forms, allowing viewers to join reporters in real time. The New York Times’s Deborah Acosta used Facebook Live to help her solve a mystery– and produce her story– in real time.
Finally, the course will explore how live streaming serves a smaller more focused community than television, essentially “narrowcasting” instead of broadcasting.
