Build something of your own! This module focuses on developing your own journalism startup. We’ll operate in sprint mode, moving quickly through the 15-week term starting with training in idea development and moving on to a fun and creative process for sharpening ideas. We’ll then test and refine those ideas and build prototypes. By the time the course ends, you’ll have conceived of and taken the first steps toward launching your own new venture. You’ll also have produced a prototype. Along the way you’ll learn about what helps journalism startups succeed — and in many cases, fail. Students in the past have developed new topic-focused websites, newsletters, events and zines that fill gaps in the media ecosystem. We meet once weekly in person and participate online during the week in course-related discussions. The course consists of project-based learning, i.e. sessions involve doing, not just listening. Between sessions you’ll engage with readings, discussions, and assignments to help you develop your venture.
