Voices and Perspectives in Conflict

Course Details

Welcome to the Divided States of America: Antifa on the far left bashes Breitbart on the far right, and vice versa. In Voices, we travel and talk to these folks and others equally radioactive. Journalism is where national and local arguments play out—over race, politics, religion, economics, class, gender, identity, immigration, police, the military and more. Journalists are tasked with understanding and translating these conflict areas for news consumers. This course introduces seminar members to those whose voices are almost never heard. We find people who’ve had journalism committed against them.  We take reporting trips to the home bases of these disenfranchised, and we invite them to Newmark. We produce three 800-word stories in text, audio or video formats and read first-person reportage about the places and people we visit.
