Commencement Guide

CUNY commencement

Cap and Gowns

All candidates must wear academic regalia – caps, hoods, tassels, and gowns. You will reserve your cap and gown online (you will receive an email with details on how to place your order) and pick them up in the Office of Student Affairs. We will notify you when they are ready to be picked up. The fee for this attire is $50 per student to be paid at pickup.

Please make sure you notify Lindsey Allen, by email or in person, of your measurements (height and cap size) if you missed this during orientation.

Immediately following the commencement ceremony, you must turn in your graduation gown and hood in Room 434 (room subject to change) at the Newmark J-School. You will be able to keep your cap and tassel. Failure to return your gown and hood will mean you will not receive your diploma.

Commencement Tickets

Each student will receive two (2) TimesCenter tickets. Tickets will be distributed in the Student Affairs office located on the 3rd floor of the J-School.

  • Tickets & invitations will be distributed the first week of December.
  • We will inform you via email once your tickets are available for pickup.
  • Any tickets that haven’t been picked up will be distributed to other graduating students.

If you are unable to pick up your tickets personally, you can authorize someone to get them for you. You must email Lindsey Allen in advance if someone else is picking up your tickets.

Please be aware no tickets will be distributed to anyone other than yourself if you haven’t informed our office in advance by email. Phone calls will not be accepted.

Students who need more tickets should communicate with their classmates to see if anyone has tickets they are not using. If you do not plan on using all of your tickets and no fellow student has asked for them, please turn in your extras to Lindsey Allen in the Office of Student Affairs so that we can distribute them to other graduating students.

CUNY commencement

In the days following commencement, graduates who have met their academic requirements must take care of the following before seeing Alexa Maurer for their diploma:

  • File your capstone with the library.
  • Turn in all equipment to the Equipment Room.
  • Return all books to the library.
  • Pay all fines from the Equipment Room and/or library in full.
  • Make sure all Graduate Center holds are removed from your file.

The above steps must be completed by January 31st. Students will not receive their diplomas before this date.

Once graduates have met the above requirements, they will receive a receipt from the Equipment Room. Students must bring these receipts to a meeting with Alexa Maurer in the Office of Student Affairs, where she will conduct a short exit interview. After the exit interview, and assuming that all academic requirements have been satisfied, graduates will receive their diplomas.

Diplomas are awarded only to those who have completed the requirements for a degree. Attending the commencement ceremony and inclusion in the commencement program merely indicates that an individual is a candidate for graduation and is not proof of completion of the degree requirements.

Friday, December 13, 2019, from 11:00 a.m. to approximately 12:30 p.m. Only those guests with commencement tickets will be admitted into TheTimesCenter during that period.

Eligibility & Policy

All students within six credits of completion are eligible to participate in commencement, but participation does not mean students have met the requirements for the degree.

Commencement Fee

There is a one-time commencement fee of $50 per student. The fee covers the rental cost of your cap and gown regalia. You may pay with a credit card in the Student Affairs Office. We cannot accept checks, cash, or money orders.

Students will proceed into TheTimesCenter in alphabetical order. All graduates will meet in TheTimesCenter at 10:00 a.m. on the morning of commencement.

Transportation & Parking

We recommend that you and your guests take public transportation or a taxi to the commencement ceremony. TheTimesCenter is located in the central Times Square area of Manhattan, connected to many subway lines. Trains A, C, E, 1, 2, 3, 7, N, R, Q, W, S (shuttle to Grand Central) all connect to the Times Square stop.

If you wish to drive, be aware that street parking is extremely limited. We recommend using one of the many commercially operated parking garages in the vicinity of TheTimesCenter.

Accessibility: Disabled Students & Guests

Graduates who need an interpreter for the hearing impaired for themselves or their guests should contact Lindsey Allen or call (646)758-7863 so that they will be seated in the vicinity of the interpreter. Please call before December 1. Graduates and guests in wheelchairs and those who have difficulty with other obstructions should also call to make special arrangements.
