Commencement Guide

CUNY commencement

Cap and Gowns

All candidates must wear academic regalia – caps, hoods, tassels and gowns. You will be able to pick up your graduation attire in the Admissions & Student Services Office. We will notify you when it is ready to be picked up.  The fee for this attire is $50/student to be paid when the attire is distributed to the student.

Please make sure you notify Marisa Osorio, by email or in person, of your measurements if you missed this during orientation (height).

Immediately following the Commencement ceremony, you must turn in your graduation gown and hood in Room 308 at the Newmark J-School (just off the lobby of the third floor reception). Students will be able to keep their cap and tassel. Your gown and hood must be returned. Failure to do so will mean you will not receive your diploma.

Commencement Tickets

Each student will receive two (2) Times Center tickets. Tickets will be distributed in the Admissions & Student Services Office located on the Third Floor of the J-School.

  • Tickets & invitations will be distributed — the first week of December.
  • We will inform you via email once your tickets are available for pick up.
  • Any tickets that haven’t been picked up will be distributed to other students who are graduating.

If you are unable to pick up your tickets personally, you can authorize someone to pick them up for you. You must inform this office in advance if someone else is picking up your tickets by emailing Marisa Osorio.

Please be aware that under no circumstances will tickets be distributed to anyone other than yourself if you haven’t informed our office in advance by email. Phone calls will not be accepted.

Students who need more tickets should communicate with their colleagues to see if anyone is not using all tickets. If you do not plan on using all of your tickets and no fellow classmate has asked for them, please turn in your extra tickets to Marisa Osorio in the Admissions & Student Affairs Office, so that we can distribute them to other graduating students.

CUNY commencement

In the days following Commencement, graduates who have met their academic requirements must take care of the following before seeing Alexa Maurer or Marisa Osorio for their diploma:

  • The capstone must be filed with the library.
  • All equipment must be turned in to the equipment room.
  • All books must be returned to the library.
  • All fines from the equipment room and/or library must be paid in full.
  • All Graduate Center holds must be removed from a student’s file.

The above steps must be completed by January 31st. Students will not receive their diplomas before this date.

Once graduates have met the above requirements, they will receive a receipt from the Equipment Room. Students must then bring these receipts and meet with Alexa Maurer in the Admissions & Student Affairs Office for a short exit interview. After the exit interview, and assuming that all academic requirements have been satisfied, graduates will receive their diplomas.
Diplomas are awarded only to those who have completed the requirements for a degree. Attending the Commencement ceremony and inclusion in the Commencement program merely indicates that an individual is a candidate for graduation and is not proof of completion of the degree requirements.

Friday, December 14, 2018, from 11:00 AM to approximately 12:30 PM. Only those guests with Commencement tickets will be admitted into The Times Center during that period.

More Information

Eligibility & Policy

All students within six credits of completion are eligible to participate in Commencement, but participation does not mean students have met the requirements for the degree.

Commencement Fee

There is a one-time Commencement fee of $50/student. The fee covers the rental cost of your cap and gown regalia.

You may pay with a credit card in the Admissions & Student Services Office. We cannot accept checks, cash or money orders.

Students will proceed into The Times Center in alphabetical order. All graduates will meet in the Times Center at 10:00 AM on the morning of Commencement.

Transportation & Parking

We recommend that you and your guests take public transportation, or a taxi to the Commencement ceremony. The Times Center is located in the central Times Square area of Manhattan, connected to many subway lines. Trains A, C, E, 1, 2, 3, 7, N, R, Q, W, S (shuttle to Grand Central) all connect to the Times Square stop.

If you wish to drive, be aware that street parking is extremely limited. We recommend using one of the many commercially operated parking garages in the vicinity of the Times Center.

Accessibility: Disabled Students & Guests

Graduates and guests for whom an interpreter for the hearing impaired is required should contact Marisa Osorio or call (646)758-7748 so that they will be seated in the vicinity of the interpreter. Please call before December 1. Graduates and guests in wheelchairs and those who have difficulty with other obstructions should also call and register to make special arrangements.
