SUMMARY:Coronavirus and NYC's Chinese Community: Disinformation\, Discrimination\, and What to Expect
DESCRIPTION:The Center for Community Media (CCM) is organizing a panel on the coronavirus outbreak. Communities across the city are looking for more information about the situation in NYC\, the measures being taken to protect the city\, how organizations are dealing with the outbreak\, the rumors surrounding the virus threat\, and how local businesses in NYC have been affected. \nNo cases of the virus have been reported in NYC but the outbreak is adversely impacting Chinese and other Asian community-run businesses. \nDr. Syra Madad will brief the media on the virus threat and the state of city hospitals. He is senior director of the system-wide special pathogens program for NYC Health & Hospitals. \nCommunity leader Wellington Chen\, executive director of the Chinatown Partnership\, will talk about the adverse impact of the virus-related rumors on businesses in Chinatown and elsewhere. \nKeenan Chen of First Draft News\, an expert on disinformation in social media\, will focus on the possible sources of disinformation and how best to cover the crisis in a responsible way. \nThe moderator is Rong Xiaoqing of the Sing Tao Daily. \nThe event is part of CCM’s Newsmaker Series\, which are on-the-record conversations between public officials and journalists from the community media. \nClick here to register. \n
