SUMMARY:The Most Important Story You're Ignoring: The Aging City
DESCRIPTION:New York City is getting older\, fast. The population aged 65 or older is expected to grow 20 percent over the next 20 years–five times faster than the population under 18 is slated to grow. That will create huge opportunities for the city’s culture\, workforce and social fabric–and real challenges related to housing\, health\, transit and more. \nAging policy involves not just social issues but civil rights; it’s a topic where deep-seated stereotypes about the old intersect with other forms of injustice like racism\, sexism and homophobia. This panel will introduce reporters to the basics of aging issues\, suggest topics for ambitious reporters to explore and offer resources as well as do’s and don’ts for reporters hoping to make a difference. \nREGISTER HERE \nModerator:\nJarrett Murphy is an editor at City Limits\, where he has worked since 2007. \nPanelists:\nBobbie Sackman is a Member Leader with Jews for Racial & Economic Justice (JFREJ) and a campaign leader with NY Caring Majority. \nChristian González-Rivera is the director of strategic policy initiatives at the Brookdale Center for Healthy Aging\, CUNY’s aging research\, policy\, and professional development center. \nKatelyn Andrews is the Director of Public Policy of LiveOn NY a membership organization representing more than 100 community-based organizations that serve older New Yorkers. \nKevin Jones worked on state policy and advocacy with various trade associations. He is the Associate State Director for Advocacy\, covering New York City for AARP.
