SUMMARY:Take Cover! Newsgathering Rights and Safety Tips for Community Journalists Covering the Elections
DESCRIPTION:This training will be held online in Spanish. \nInstructors: \n\nDagmar Thiel\, CEO\, Fundamedios USA\nPatricia J. Peña\, Associate\, Davis Wright Tremaine LLP\n\nAs newsrooms across the U.S. lay out their plans for this year’s Election Day coverage\, Latino news media should take extra precaution when deploying staff\, and ensuring their safety and the access to materials and information their audiences have a right to\, but regularly need to push for. \nThe Center for Community Media’s Latino Media Initiative will hold an online\, 90-minute long training session in Spanish on the safety guidelines and information rights that Latino reporters and community journalists have to consider when covering elections. This session is held in partnership with ProJourn\, a program of the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press. \nThis session is open to the public as a stand-alone training that serves publishers\, editors and reporters alike. Join us for this session to: \n\nLearn about the threats and violence that community journalists and Latino reporters experience in the field.\nObtain guidance on how to get information and take photos at voting centers\, protests\, and demonstrations.\nGain insight into reporting from the field on Election Day and learn about legal safeguards available for reporters on the ground.\nLearn how to navigate encounters with law enforcement at protests.\nGet safety tips on how to address discrimination and assault from others.\n\nRegister here \nEmail CCM if you do not receive a confirmation email after registering or if you have any questions about the event: ccm@journalism.cuny.edu \n\nInstructors \nDagmar Thiel is an Ecuadorian-German journalist and activist who heads Fundamedios USA from its Washington\, D.C. office to promote freedom of expression in the region. Her work has focused on the development and promotion of media in authoritarian environments and on the training and support of journalists in exile. She has been a consultant for George Mason University\, IREX\, Internews and FLED\, among other organizations. In 2020\, she published the study “Discrimination against Latino journalists in the United States” and developed a course to reduce the wage gap that affects Latina journalists. Thiel has extensive experience in communications\, public affairs\, institutional reputation\, and corporate sustainability. \nPatricia J. Peña focuses her practice on counseling and defending large technology\, media and entertainment companies on intellectual property matters\, as well as advertising\, AdTech\, and marketing law. She also provides pre-broadcast counseling in both English and Spanish for production companies and studios. Before joining Davis Wright Tremaine LLP\, Patricia served in the Miami-Dade Public Defender’s Office\, where she gained litigation experience as a trial attorney. Prior to her legal career\, Patricia worked in marketing and media\, and applies her corporate knowledge and expertise to solving business legal issues. As a marketing professional\, Patricia developed and executed multi-layered campaigns for her clients’ products and services\, tailored to launch in U.S. Hispanic and Latin American markets. \n\nAbout CCM and the Latino Media Initiative: The Center for Community Media at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism serves news organizations that provide essential local coverage for populations whose voices and issues are underrepresented in mainstream media. The Center serves as a hub of information\, resources\, and training aimed at increasing the sustainability of the local news media sector. Its Latino Media Initiative focuses on supporting Latino news media makers\, community media entrepreneurs and Latino-centered newsrooms with capacity building\, direct investment\, sector analysis and business development programs. \nAbout ProJourn of the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press: ProJourn\, an innovative pro bono program operated by the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press\, aims to “grow the bench” of attorneys standing up for journalism at this critical time when local news reporting faces dire challenges and democracy itself is at a crossroads. It’s mission is to increase the supply of pro bono attorneys trained in pre-publication review and access to public records — two of the most critical editorial legal needs of journalists — and to meet the legal demands newsrooms face in an ever-changing news landscape\, including business\, 501(c)(3)\, and operations-related needs.
