The research showed that Black media talked about topics of importance to Black communities more often\, and connected news events to history in a way mainstream media did not. In academia\, he enriches minds as a lecturer\, specifically an adjunct professor\, at the University of Houston Main Campus’s African American Studies Department\, a role he has held since 2004. His expertise shines through in courses like “The Black Church in America” and “Black Liberation Theology.” His scholarly contributions include authoring five books and providing insights for the Frederick Douglass Encyclopedia and the Journal of Black Studies. \nDr. Kaia Niambi Shivers\, a scholar in media studies focusing on identity and the African diaspora\, leads Ark Republic\, a news platform highlighting underrepresented stories. Ark Republic\, known for its global perspective and social justice\, has collaborated with over 90 contributors worldwide and hosts significant community events. Recognized for its innovative approach\, it has received multiple accolades\, including Comcast RISE and Google News Initiative Fund awards. \nMacollvie J. Neel is a writer\, editor\, and communications consultant focused on elevating voices in workplaces and media spaces through her work in journalism and communications. As a journalist\, Neel serves as special project editor of The Haitian Times. In her communications consulting roles\, Neel develops plans and content to support strategic programs at Fortune 500 companies. She also crafts communications for ambitious professionals who prioritize career advancement to navigate their jobs. Neel explores these topics in her forthcoming book\, Scripts for Success. \nAbout the Black Media Initiative \nThe Black Media Initiative is a national capacity building initiative for Black owned and controlled media. Its aim is to support Black media by providing research\, training and connections. We are a part of the Center for Community Media which is housed at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY.

DESCRIPTION:Who decides which stories get told? \n \nJoin us for a screening of the documentary\, “Breaking The News\,” hosted by award-winning filmmaker Yoruba Richen. \n \nThe film follows a group of women and LGBTQ+ journalists who are fighting the white male-dominated status quo by launching The 19th*\, a digital news startup aiming to combat misinformation and highlight issues of gender in national politics\n \nIt’s a story of an America in flux\, and the voices that often are left out of the narrative. The documentary “Breaking the News” shows that change doesn’t come easy.\n \nProfessor Richen will host a discussion with director and producer Princess A. Hairston and editor Jamie Boyle following the discussion.
