SUMMARY:AI for Community Media: Fact-Checking Tools | Data Journalism
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Mike Reilley\, Senior Lecturer at University of Illinois Chicago and founder of JournalistsToolbox.ai \nFact-Checking Tools and Best Practices (60 minutes):\nIn this part of the training\, we’ll explore ways to fight back against misinformation and disinformation during post-election coverage. We’ll use tools such as Google Fact-Check Explorer to track fact-checked images and stories. We’ll use reverse image search and other Google tools to check election claims. We’ll break down doctored video and audio with WatchFramebyFrame and Deepfake-o-meter. We’ll also look at the innovative Rolliapp.com to track disinformation spreaders on social channels. \nParticipants get a handout with links to tools and exercise materials you can take to your newsroom. Prior to the training\, set up a free Rolliapp.com “press pass” account as it takes a couple of days to get approved. \nData Journalism (60 minutes):\nData scraping web pages with Google sheets\, scraping PDFs with Tabula and PDFtoExcel.com. Building graphics with Flourish.studio. We’ll also work with AI tools Julius and Napkin.ai\, among others\, to scrape and analyze data. \nThis session is the first of three AI for Community Media sessions organized and developed by the Center for Community Media. Mike teaches data and digital journalism courses at the University of Illinois Chicago. He is also a digital tools trainer who has taught Google News Initiative tools to more than 12\,500 journalists and educators in the past seven years. He also is the founder of Penny Press Digital LLC\, a digital consulting and training company that works with media outlets such as USA Today. A former reporter and copy editor at the LA Times and a founding editor of ChicagoTribune.com\, Mike served for 13 years as a full-time faculty member at Northwestern\, Arizona State University and DePaul University. He holds journalism degrees from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Northwestern University. Mike founded the research site The Journalist’s Toolbox AI.
