SUMMARY:Covering Democracy: Protests\, Police and the Press
DESCRIPTION:The Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism and the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University invite you to attend a reception\, film screening\, and panel discussion on Covering Democracy: Protests\, Police and the Press. \nDate: Tuesday\, Sep. 26\, 2023\nReception: 6 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.\nScreening and panel discussion: 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.\nLocation: Ford Foundation Center for Social Justice\n320 E 43rd St\, New York\, NY \nRegister \nDespite the promise of the First Amendment\, the rights of journalists to cover protests have never been secure. Hundreds of journalists have been detained\, arrested\, and assaulted by police while reporting on demonstrations throughout the United States. The challenges were particularly acute during the social justice protests that erupted following the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis and spread throughout the nation. \nCovering Democracy: Protests\, Police and the Press\, released in June from the Knight First Amendment Institute and written by Joel Simon\, founding director of the Journalism Protection Initiative at the Newmark J-School\, chronicles the history of hostility between the press and the police from the Civil Rights era to the present day. It offers specific recommendations\, prepared by the Knight Institute\, on how to protect press freedom and the right to record at future protests. \nThe evening will kick off with an advance screening of the Knight Institute’s soon-to-be-released short documentary film exploring the same issues\, “Flashpoint: Protests\, Policing\, and the Press.” The film features the stories of several journalists who were assaulted or arrested while reporting at protests and explores the conflict and tension experienced on the front lines\, the changing role of the press\, and the hardening of attitudes among the police towards journalists. \nOpening Remarks: \n\nGraciela Mochkofsky\, Dean of the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism\n\nPanelists: \n\nJoel Simon\, Founding Director of the Journalism Protection Initiative at Newmark J-School\nKaty Glenn Bass\, Research Director at the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University\nCerise Castle\, Los Angeles-based journalist\, honored for her reporting on police gangs. She was assaulted by police while covering a protest in LA.\nMike Shum\, independent filmmaker\, and producer and director of the PBS Frontline documentary “Police on Trial.” He was assaulted by police while reporting in Minneapolis in May 2020.\n\nThe panel will be moderated by Wesley Lowery\, author of “American Whitelash: A Changing Nation and the Cost of Progress” and Journalist-in-Residence at Newmark J-School.

SUMMARY:I Wish We'd Known That: Leading Journalists Look Back at the Russian Story
DESCRIPTION:RSVP Now \nThe invasion of Ukraine seems to have finally eviscerated Russia’s post-Soviet hopes for democracy\, human rights\, and reconciliation with the past. Through this period – and especially the 23 years of Vladimir Putin’s rule – independent journalism strove in the absence of free institutions of state and alongside government-aligned media to bear attentive and accurate witness to Russia’s transformation. That has largely ended with Putin’s shuttering of independent media outlets\, their offices disbanded\, and journalists forced into exile. If their work is not saved\, the record it represents might be erased forever. \nThe Russian Independent Media Archive\, a new project undertaken by PEN America with the Gagarin Center at Bard College and made in collaboration with Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine\, is preserving the archives of these outlets as vital resources for making sense of Russia’s past and its future. The project’s online platform forms a “digital ark” for securing this irreplaceable journalism\, where possible in collaboration with the outlets’ editors\, and offering access to writers\, researchers\, scholars\, and others seeking to build a historical narrative that stands against propaganda efforts to reinterpret the past. \nAs we unveil this project\, noted journalists who have covered Russia will reflect on their reporting\, drawing on the archive for insights on three questions: What did I not know back then? What has been revealed now? How can it help us in the future? \nPanelists: \n\nMasha Gessen\, staff writer\, The New Yorker; author of “Surviving Autocracy\,” “The Future Is History\,” “The Man Without a Face”\nSusan Glasser\, staff writer\, The New Yorker; author of “Kremlin Rising\, The Man Who Ran Washington” and most recently “The Divider\,” which she co-wrote with her husband Peter Baker\nBeth Knobel\, associate professor of Communication and Media Studies at Fordham University\nAnna Nemzer\, TV presenter at the major independent Russian TV channel “Dozhd”\nDavid Remnick\, editor of The New Yorker; author of six books\, including “Lenin’s Tomb: The Last Days of the Soviet Empire”\n\nJoin us for a 5:00 p.m. – 6:15 p.m. panel in the newsroom followed by a reception from 6:15 p.m. – 7 p.m. Please RSVP. \n\nSponsors: The Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism\, PEN America\, and the Russian Independent Media Archive (RIMA)\, a joint initiative of PEN America and Bard College\, and made in collaboration with Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine.

SUMMARY:Covering Police Killings: A Mother’s Fight for Justice
DESCRIPTION:Mona Hardin has been fighting for justice for her son\, Ronald Greene\, since Louisiana State Police alleged he died in a car accident in 2019. She questioned their story immediately. \nThe reality — that he died after being beaten\, dragged and tased by state troopers — came to light after Carl Cavalier (top image)\, a trooper himself\, told the truth at the cost of his job. Videos of Greene’s beating later emerged\, via The Associated Press. \nIn the wake of the horrific killing of Tyre Nichols at the hands of police in Memphis\, Ms. Hardin and Mr. Cavalier will answer your questions about what it’s like to be in the middle of a police killing and attempted cover-up. \nThey’ll also offer guidance to reporters on what to expect as the Nichols case goes from a widely publicized video to the tougher work of accountability that plays out behind the scenes as much as in court. \nJoin us\, via Zoom\, on Tuesday\, Feb. 28\, from 12:30pm to 1:30pm\, for this session\, to be moderated by Prof. Daryl Khan. \nRSVP Now \nThis important discussion is part of the Tow Criminal Justice Initiative\, a drive to strengthen criminal justice reporting in New York City and around the country.

SUMMARY:How They Did It: A Master Class in Investigative Reporting
DESCRIPTION:After two years of relentless reporting\, the AP’s Margie Mason and Robin McDowell delivered a powerful three-part series\, Fruits of Labor\, on the abusive practices of the international palm oil industry. The series was a Pulitzer finalist and won nearly a dozen major awards. Mason and McDowell showed how the everyday products we use\, from soaps and lipstick to peanut butter and Girl Scout cookies\, are produced at the expense of enslaved and abused workers including children who are forced into labor and women facing violence. \nJoin us to learn from these two reporters how they found sources and chased leads to get to the truth. Ron Nixon\, the AP’s global investigations editor\, will open with a brief discussion of the challenges of investigative reporting in the current media environment. The panel will be moderated by Jane Sasseen\, executive director of the Newmark Graduate School of Journalism’s  McGraw Center for Business Journalism\, which supported the AP project. \nREGISTER HERE.
