SUMMARY:Covering Sexual Misconduct in the #MeToo Era: Are You Ready?
DESCRIPTION:Hollywood\, the Beltway\, Silicon Valley\, newsrooms\, corporations—all are being rocked by the #MeToo movement. Are you prepared to cover a sexual misconduct allegation when you receive a tip or follow a lead?  With the benefit of the doubt shifting toward those who say they have been victimized by the powerful\, how will you report the facts fairly?  What are the important stories we’re missing along the way? \nJoin The Deadline Club in a frank and informative talk with leading media figures who’ve broken news and advanced the discussion in important ways. They include: \n· Koa Beck\, editor-in-chief of Jezebel\n· Alexandra DeSanctis\, National Review fellow and co-host of “The Liberty Files”podcast\n· Emily Steel\, media reporter\, The New York Times \nSteel’s reporting exposed settlements relating to allegations against Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly. Beck’s Jezebel has shined the spotlight on the problem for years\, and she regularly shares insights about it on WNYC’s The Takeaway. DeSanctis’ commentary questions popular narratives about the #MeToo movement. We’re in for a lively discussion with plenty of takeaways for news professionals. \nReception starts at 6:30 p.m. followed by the panel discussion at 7:00 p.m.\nTickets are free for Deadline Club members and $10 for non-members.

SUMMARY:Let the Sunshine In: From Prisons to the White House Using FOIA to Expose Government Secrets
DESCRIPTION:Red Cross failures in disaster relief; Alleged conflicts of interest tainting Trump’s inner circle; Mayor de Blasio donors with major City Hall sway; Delays in newborn screenings with deadly implications – all government secrets that top journalists from Politico\, ProPublica\, the New York Times and the Associated Press have exposed using the Freedom of Information Act. Learn how they do it so you too can become a FOIA ninja. Our all-star panel will share their experience extracting records through the Freedom of Information Act\, while offering tips and strategies on how to file better FOI requests to get what you want. \nThe panel includes the following speakers: \nLaura Nahmias is a reporter for POLITICO New York\, covering City Hall and Mayor Bill de Blasio.\nNahmias dug into thousands of emails released under a FOIA request to show how a major donor to Mayor de Blasio had major influence. \nEllen Gabler is an investigative reporter with the New York Times.\nGabler uses FOIA requests to dig into medical investigations that couldn’t be done without data or documents. \nJustin Elliott is a reporter with ProPublica.\nElliott has used FOIA requests to dig into the Trump administration’s attempts to change the U.S. Census and to scrutinize the American Red Cross’s performance after major disasters. \nJake Pearson is a reporter with the Associated Press.\nPearson regularly uses FOIA requests on a range of stories\, from documenting in-custody deaths at New York City’s Rikers Island to peeking into federal investigations of public agencies. \nThis event is free.

SUMMARY:Between Likes and Lies: The Battle Against Media Manipulation
DESCRIPTION:From social movements to political parties\, governments\, dissidents\, and corporations\, many groups engage in active efforts to shape media narratives. These efforts to exploit technical\, social\, economic and institutional configurations of media can catalyze social change\, sow dissent\, and challenge the stability of social institutions. \nThe News Integrity Initiative and the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism will host Data & Society Research Institute and researchers from the Media Manipulation Initiative (MMI) for an overview of the research initiative’s approach to understanding the social\, political\, and economic incentives to game information systems\, websites\, platforms\, and search engines. The team will also preview several of their upcoming research reports for an audience of journalists and media makers. \nSpeakers for the evening will include: \n\nJoan Donovan\, Research Lead for the Media Manipulation Initiative\, with an overview of Data & Society’s Media Manipulation Initiative and a preview of The Oxygen of Amplification: Better Practices for Reporting on Extremists\, Antagonists\, and Manipulators Online by Whitney Phillips. The paper focuses on interviews with journalists and seeks to create a new paradigm for editorial best practices that is designed to minimize narrative hijacking by bad-faith actors (launching May 22);\n\n\ndanah boyd\, Principal Researcher at Microsoft Research and Founder/President of Data & Society\, on Media Literacy Frames which draws on Dr. boyd’s work examining the unique challenges of trying to inform the public amidst an epistemological war;\n\n\nFrancesca Tripodi\, Data & Society Researcher\, on Searching for Alternative Facts\, Analyzing Scriptural Inference in Conservative News Practices informed by Dr. Tripodi’s ethnographic research within upper-middle class communities in the Southeastern United States (launching May 16);\n\n\n\nJeff Jarvis\, CUNY’s Director of Tow-Knight Center for Entreprenurial Journalism\, will join Joan Donovan in an armchair conversation.\n\nThe program for the evening will end with a faciliated Q&A discussion with the audience. A catered reception will follow the talk. \nRSVP is required to attend. Photo ID will be required at the door. \nThis event is made possible through the generous support of Craig Newmark Philanthropies and the News Integrity Initiative. \nAbout The News Integrity Initiative at CUNY Graduate School of Journalism:\nThe News Integrity Initiative at the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism is a philanthropic fund and a global coalition of newsrooms\, nonprofits\, technologists\, and academics to foster mutually trusting relationships between journalists and the communities they serve\, while also tackling the spread of disinformation\, and nurturing respectful and inclusive civic dialogue. NII is a project of the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism\, under the auspices of the Tow-Knight Center for Entrepreneurial Journalism. \nAbout Data & Society and the Media Manipulation Initiative (MMI):\nData & Society is a research institute in New York City that is focused on the social and cultural issues arising from data-centric and automated technologies. \nThe Media Manipulation Initiative (MMI) at Data & Society examines how different groups use the participatory culture of the internet to turn the strengths of a free society into vulnerabilities\, ultimately threatening expressive freedoms and civil rights. Broadly\, this initiative takes a sociotechnical approach to understanding the social\, political\, and economic incentives to game information systems\, websites\, platforms\, and search engines—especially in cases where the attackers intend to destabilize democratic\, social\, and economic institutions. Through empirical research\, we identify the unintended consequences of socio-technical systems and track attempts to locate and address threats\, with an eye towards increasing organizational capacity across fields\, so that action can be taken as problems emerge.
