DESCRIPTION:The Brooklyn Film Festival is hosting a special screening of short documentaries from J-School students on June 4 at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema in downtown Brooklyn. \nThe evening starts at 6:00 p.m. with a mixer on the Alamo’s rooftop deck for filmmakers and audience members interested in learning more about the documentary program.  All CUNY J-School students are welcome. Showtime starts at 8:30 p.m. with a special screening of student work curated by the head of the CUNY J-School’s Documentary program Yoruba Richen. DESCRIPTION:A diverse panel of journalists and media executives share their experiences\, advice and best practices for navigating and negotiating workplace politics. The goal is to have a candid conversation about inclusion\, safe spaces\, and provide practical tips for interns working at media companies and in newsrooms. \n\nLaura Holson\, Feature and News Writer\, The New York Times\, is an award-winning multi-media journalist for The New York Times who focuses on personality profiles and narrative storytelling. She has written for Vanity Fair\, The New York Times Magazine\, and Smart Money magazine. Ms. Holson joined The Times in 1998\, covering the mergers and acquisition boom and then\, in 2000\, moved to LA to write about Hollywood and the major movie studios. In 2007\, she returned to New York where she continues to write about Silicon Valley\, entertainment\, wealth and power. She was awarded a National Magazine Award for public service\, has an undergraduate degree from the University of California\, Santa Barbara and went to journalism school at the University of Missouri-Columbia.\nKyle Godfrey-Ryan\, Co-Founder of Press Forward; Founder & CEO of Tune. Studio\, a native NYer\, with a background in religious and political studies. After working for Charlie Rose\, Kyle decided to leave journalism and focus on wellness. She then went on become a nutritionist and a function medical coach. In September 2017\, Kyle launched Tune.Studio\, a human refueling station that leverages a medical vibration technology. Cohen\, is a highly regarded business affairs\, employment and media attorney with over 30 years of legal experience. She served for over 25 years at ABC Television where she held a variety of positions\, including Vice President of Business Affairs for ABC News. Andrea now uses her legal and business skills to represent clients in her private legal practice. She focuses on both employees and employers in business affairs matters\, contract and severance negotiations\, and discrimination claims. Andrea’s deep experience on both sides of the employment relationship gives her a unique advantage in helping her clients. Andrea represents clients at all levels\, from top management and leadership to employees just starting out\, and across a wide range of industries. Andrea also has a strong commitment to the community and for the last four years has been an actively involved with the South Bronx Early College Academy Charter School\, a charter school serving low income children.\nBrent Jones\, Assistant Managing Editor\, The Wall Street Journal\, oversees training and outreach and has over 20 years of newsroom experience which includes recruitment\, college partnerships and running a year-round intern program. Prior to joining the Journal\, Brent oversaw newsroom standards for USA Today and Gannett’s 109 local newsrooms. He created\, produced and hosted USA Today’s first media ethics podcast called OFF THE RECORD \, a monthly program that focused on ethical considerations behind news coverage. He has also contributed to public discussions on related topics for the American Bar Association\, Poynter Institute\, journalism schools and college campuses\, such as the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s annual journalism ethics conference. He is a member of the National Association of Black Journalists and serves on the board of visiting advisers at Morgan State’s School of Journalism and Communication.\n\nThe panel will be moderated by former president of Al Jazeera America Kate O’Brian. She is a seasoned journalist with over 20 years of gold standard leadership at ABC News and Al Jazeera America. She served ABC News in various roles from 1980 through 2013\, ultimately as Vice President for News. While at ABC\, Kate received numerous awards including an Alfred I. DuPont and Peabody for her team’s coverage of September 11th and an Emmy for the 2000 Millennium coverage. Kate was recruited to become President of Al Jazeera America in 2013 where she led the network to win nearly every major journalism award during her tenure\, including the Peabody\, plus recognition from the National Association of Black Journalists and the Native American Journalist Association. DESCRIPTION:The Ippies Awards are given to the ethnic and community press by the Center for Community and Ethnic Media at CUNY Graduate School of Journalism. It is the only New York-area competition that recognizes excellence among journalists\, photographers\, graphic artists\, editors\, publishers and broadcasters of the ethnic and community media. Scores of onlookers took photos as the train passed through their cities and towns. Magnum Photographer Paul Fusco\, who was on the train\, documented the thousands of Americans who lined the train tracks to pay their last respects to the senator. \nFifty years later\, Dutch photographer Rein Terpstra has compiled a book that combines a remarkable collection of photos that bystanders took of the funeral train with previously unpublished photographs by Paul Fusco.
