DESCRIPTION:Join us for a free screening of the award-winning film “We the Stones” followed by a Q&A with filmmaker Alvaro Torres Crespo. \nAbout the film:\nEven though the Costa Rican government expelled them from their lands in the name of ecologic preservation 40 years ago\, a group of panners keep searching the rivers for gold in the jungle. Their living as modern pariahs shows their fight for survivance and questions the country’s conservationist fame. You can watch the trailer here. \nAbout the filmmaker:\nAlvaro Torres Crespo is based in San José\, his hometown. He studied audiovisual production at the Northwest Film Center in Oregon\, and completed a Master’s degree in Film and Script at the University of Texas at Austin. His shorts\, both documentaries and fictions\, have participated in festivals in Central America and the United States. Álvaro is a professor of direction and direction of photography at the Film and Television School of the Veritas University. He recently completed his feature film\, Nosotros las piedras\, a documentary about the gold panners of the Osa Peninsula in Costa Rica\, which just began its distribution\, and is currently working on the development of his fiction debut Quebrada Ignacia. \nThe screening will be followed by a conversation with Alvaro Torres Crespo and Yoruba Richen\, director of the documentary program at Newmark J-School. \nPlease RSVP here.

You’ll hear about all of the diverse strategies they’ve used in working with a range of communities\, from the community impacted by opioid-use disorders\, accessibility for New Yorkers in need\, to serving boys and young men of color as they begin to understand their role in society. \nEach student will have nine minutes — time limit strictly enforced! — to describe what they’ve done and learned throughout the program. DESCRIPTION:With the upcoming 2020 election and census\, the Newmark J-School is hosting a day-long training by our partner\, First Draft\, to prepare journalism students in identifying\, verifying\, and responsible reporting of disinformation that they may encounter covering these national events. \nStudents will spend the morning working on a simulated crisis to learn how to cover a breaking news event that includes online disinformation\, i.e. fake websites\, social media posts and manipulated videos. In the afternoon\, they’ll have two master classes — one in identifying disinformation and a second in verification of online content.
