DESCRIPTION:Serving Asian American and Pacific Islander Communities in an Evolving Media Landscape \n  \nREGISTER HERE \n  \nNewmark J-School and the Center for Community Media are hosting a virtual town hall to launch the Asian Media Initiative\, the first national initiative to organize and build sustainability for community media for and by Asian American and Pacific Islander communities. \nHow can AAPI-serving media support and connect both new arrivals and longstanding Indigenous and Asian American news audiences in the face of rampant online disinformation\, political polarization\, ongoing anti-Asian violence\, and more? This town hall will engage thought leaders and Asian media journalists in a reflection on the history of Asian and AAPI-serving media in the U.S.\, and a dialogue on the future of community media in the age of social media. \nFollowing welcoming remarks by Newmark J-School dean Graciela Mochkofsky\, newly appointed Asian Media Initiative director Kavitha Rajagopalan will introduce the initiative. Rajagopalan will then moderate a panel discussion on the history of legacy Asian community media and digital storytelling\, featuring CCM communications director and longtime community media advocate Jehangir Khattak\, and digital storytelling pioneer Dr. Shirley Suet-ling Tang (鄧雪齡). \nThe following Asian media journalists will share insights to kick off a town hall conversation between journalists\, publishers\, and stakeholders in AAPI-serving community media. \n\n\nRong Xiaoqing (榮筱箐)\, Sing Tao Daily  \n\n\nKishor Panthi\, Khasokhas and NepYork \n\n\nIndah Nuritasari\, Indonesian Lantern \n\n\nGiannina Ong\, Mochi Magazine \n\n\nPanelists: \nJehangir Khattak is Communications Director at the Center for Community Media at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism. In addition to helping manage the center’s outreach to New York City’s community media\, he oversees journalism training\, fellowships\, and Newsmakers series Q&As. Khattak has worked for and with the metro New York-based community media for more than two decades. He is passionate about a sustainable community media ecosystem that produces journalism that informs and educates communities and promotes civic engagement.  He began his journalism career in 1986 in Pakistan\, working for a variety of English daily newspapers. During the 1990s\, he covered the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan\, the subsequent civil war\, the rise of the Taliban\, and upheavals in Pakistan. He remained president of the largest press club in northwestern Pakistan and worked for international organizations such as Reporters Sans Frontiers. \nDr. Shirley S. Tang (鄧雪齡) is Professor of Asian American Studies in the School for Global Inclusion and Social Development and College of Education & Human Development at the University of Massachusetts Boston. Shirley is a national leader in developing a model of curricular innovation for digital storytelling\, pedagogies of wholeness\, and AANAPISI-centered knowledge production. She has more than two dozen publications in print and received the Chancellor’s Award for Distinguished Teaching at UMass Boston in 2016\, making her the first woman of color to receive this honor in the university’s history. Shirley is currently a co-Investigator for UMass Boston’s three-year NASA MUREP grant and a co-Principal Investigator for the university’s five-year AANAPISI Part F grant. As co-principal investigator\, co-investigator\, or collaborator with partners at UMass Boston and other higher education institutions\, Dr. Tang has garnered substantial funding to support research\, curriculum development\, community engagement\, and other projects from the U.S. Department of Education\, NASA\, National Endowment for Humanities\, National Institutes for Health and the Rockefeller Foundation\, among other organizations. Led by Dr. Tang\, the Digital Storytelling in Asian American Studies Lab is a nearly 20-year commitment to student- and community-centered knowledge co-production\, research and documentation\, and archival development. Digital storytelling productions from the lab contribute to training\, community capacity building\, and public awareness. \n\nKavitha Rajagopalan is director of the Asian Media Initiative at the Center for Community Media at CUNY’s Newmark J-School. DESCRIPTION:IN-PERSON ONLY EVENT: REGISTER HERE \nJoin us for a screening of this essential documentary co-directed by Yoruba Richen\, director of the Newmark J-School’s documentary program\, in honor of Rosa Parks’ 100th birthday. Based on the bestselling biography and executive-produced by Soledad O’Brien\, the film takes a deeper dive into Parks’ often overlooked accomplishments\, detailing the actions she spearheaded throughout the civil rights movement. \nA post-screening discussion highlights the collaboration of two CUNY faculty members: the J-School’s Yoruba Richen\, award-winning filmmaker of The Green Book: Road to Freedom; and Jeanne Theoharis\, award-winning author of The Rebellious Life of Mrs. Rosa Parks and distinguished professor of Political Science at Brooklyn College and the CUNY Graduate Center. \nModerated by Carol Jenkins\, journalist\, activist\, author\, and current host of Black America on CUNY TV. \nWeekday visitors to the Graduate Center’s 365 Fifth Avenue campus no longer have to show proof of vaccination or negative PCR tests at the lobby desk. They just need to show a government-issued picture ID and sign in at the security desk.
