DESCRIPTION:Join Impact Producer Denae Peters of Film Sprout and Founder/CEO Deshuna Peters of kweliTV in a conversation on the distribution landscape for docs right now\, moderated by Distribution & Marketing Director Roselly Torres of Third World Newsreel. There are so many options available to the independent filmmaker. Should you go the festival route or a community engagement campaign? Broadcast\, online or theatrical? Streaming or pay-per-view or VOD or DVD (people still buy DVDs?)? That’s not even all your options. These women don’t have all the answers (ultimately you have to make choices)\, but they do have many good ones given their combined diverse experiences\, AND they are willing to share their knowledge. \nDenae Peters works at the New York-based consulting and distribution firm Film Sprout where she directs strategic grassroots\, community screening campaigns for feature length documentaries about social justice issues. Our all-star panel will share their experience extracting records through the Freedom of Information Act\, while offering tips and strategies on how to file better FOI requests to get what you want. \nThe panel includes the following speakers: \nLaura Nahmias is a reporter for POLITICO New York\, covering City Hall and Mayor Bill de Blasio.\nNahmias dug into thousands of emails released under a FOIA request to show how a major donor to Mayor de Blasio had major influence. \nEllen Gabler is an investigative reporter with the New York Times.\nGabler uses FOIA requests to dig into medical investigations that couldn’t be done without data or documents. \nJustin Elliott is a reporter with ProPublica.\nElliott has used FOIA requests to dig into the Trump administration’s attempts to change the U.S. Census and to scrutinize the American Red Cross’s performance after major disasters. \nJake Pearson is a reporter with the Associated Press.\nPearson regularly uses FOIA requests on a range of stories\, from documenting in-custody deaths at New York City’s Rikers Island to peeking into federal investigations of public agencies. \nThis event is free.
