In today’s fast-evolving media landscape, the smartphone has become an indispensable tool for journalists – whether capturing a single image for a news article or crafting a photo essay that unfolds over multiple photographs.
This 90-minute training will equip participants with practical techniques to create strong, engaging photographs using the phone they already carry.
This training will cover the following:
- Photojournalism ethics based on AP guidelines
- Preparing for an assignment
- Smartphone camera basics with native camera app
- Being aware of light and shadows
- Composition and framing
- Post processing photos on your phone with native editing software
- Image file formats JPEG, HEIC, RAW
- Other camera and post-processing apps
- Gear tips, e.g. monopod, tripod, phone cage, lens add-ons

Instructor
Adi Talwar is an award-winning New York City based photojournalist with a background in design, engineering and art. For over a decade, Adi’s photography has centered around civic issues, communities and individuals. He is a regular contributor to CityLimits.org. Adi has also been published in the Norwood News, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, New York Daily News, WNYC, MetroFocus, and Gothamist, to name a few. Over the years, Adi has participated in solo and group exhibitions. Adi was a BRIO (Bronx Recognizes its Own) recipient in 2020.
