Dedicated to the late Juan Flores\, it is the most comprehensive book on the subject to date. \nAlberto Vourvoulias-Bush is an adjunct faculty member of the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism\, former Op/Ed columnist\, and visiting scholar in online journalism at the American Academy in Rome. He helped found and launch foxnewslatino.com. He formerly was deputy editor of TIME Magazine’s Latin America edition and is the founding editor of Time Americas\, Time’s Spanish and Portuguese language editions. He served as corporate executive editor of impreMedia and executive editor of El Diario/La Prensa. \nJavier Castaño is the Editor and Publisher of Queens Latino newspaper and QueensLatino.com. Previously\, he was editor of El Diario/La Prensa\, El Daily News and Hoy Nueva York\, and international correspondent of El Tiempo and Diners in Colombia. He has a master’s degree from Columbia School of Journalism and has written two books. \nEd Morales is an adjunct professor at the  University and CUNY J-Schools; author of “Living in Spanglish” and other books; freelance writer for Rolling Stone\, The New York Times\, The Los Angeles Times\, The Guardian\, Jacobin\, The Nation\, the NACLA Report on the Americas\, The Progressive Media and The NiLP Report on Latino Policy & Politics. SUMMARY:The McGraw Symposium – From Fake News to Virtual Reality: Journalism in the Age of Trump
DESCRIPTION:News industry leaders Gerard Baker\, editor-in-chief of The Wall Street Journal; Sally Buzbee\, executive editor of the Associated Press; Alan Murray\, chief content officer of Time Inc.; and Josh Tyrangiel\, executive vice president of Vice News will be the featured speakers at the fourth annual McGraw Symposium. \nThe Symposium\, sponsored by the McGraw Center for Business Journalism at the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism\, will take place on Oct. 12\, 2017 at 7 pm at the J-School in conjunction with the annual conference of the Society for Business Editors and Writers. \nThe Symposium comes at a tumultuous time for the news media\, which has rarely faced such an array of challenges. Allegations of “fake news” and media bias\, attacks on the freedom of the press – and sometimes\, on journalists themselves – have been a feature of the most acrimonious relationship between news organizations and the Administration in a generation. \nTrust in the media is increasingly split along partisan lines\, spurring heated debate about the proper role of journalism. At the same time\, the pace of digital change continues to intensify\, as newsrooms double down on video and experiment with new tools such as bots and virtual reality while dealing with continuing financial pressures. \nThose are among the topics the industry leaders will cover at the Symposium. DESCRIPTION:Who would have ever thought that we’d be covering demonstrations with neo-Nazis chanting “blood and soil” in 2017? \nIn the wake of Charlottesville\, U.S. journalists are brushing up on their knowledge of such groups. As journalists\, how do we ensure even-handed coverage of clashes between white nationalist and antifa groups? And how does our love of the First Amendment guide us in covering public incidents where speech may be repressed? Where does speech end and violence begin? \nThe CUNY Graduate School of Journalism and The Deadline Club\, which is the New York City chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists\, will co-host a panel about covering hate groups on Monday\, Oct. 23. DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, October 25\, three former students of the M.A. in Social Journalism program will discuss how they put into practice the engagement and community-building skills they learned in school in their current jobs. \nDeron Dalton is an editor at the The Tylt\, an online debate site Advance Digital launched last year. He mobilizes and engages pop culture fans on Twitter and other platforms. While at CUNY-J\, he reported on the Black Lives Matter movement and organized an event on how journalists can improve coverage of activism. \nKatelyn Gillum is a community specialist at Meetup\, where she helps to bring groups of people together around shared interests and goals. She also helped build Wire the Wise\, an organization that enlists young professionals in training senior adults in using technology\, while at CUNY-J. \nRachel Glickhouse manages the Documenting Hate project at ProPublica\, a national effort involving multiple news organizations and universities to develop a database tracking hate crimes and bias incidents across the country. Previously\, Rachel worked at Univision\, and her social journalism work at CUNY-J involved covering immigration. \nWe welcome prospective students\, current students\, and anyone interested in social journalism and community engagement to attend the panel.
