DESCRIPTION:Asian community media have played a critical role in supporting and informing diverse Asian American communities through an ongoing and unmitigated hate crimes crisis. The majority of reporters in Asian community media are women\, and a growing number of women publishers and editors lead Asian community media newsrooms. \nHow are they covering these crimes? How are they supporting each other and staying safe while they report? How are they serving — and centering — their communities? Join us for an important conversation between two women journalists in Asian media\, serving very different audiences. \nSpeakers \n\nYiyan Zheng is an award-winning journalist and reporter at World Journal\, the largest Chinese-language daily newspaper in North America. Her multimedia work has appeared in media outlets such as World Journal\, Sampan Newspaper\, Beijing TV\, Propeller TV and City Limits. She is currently based in Queens and delves into topics and subjects including education\, inequality\, and Asian American communities.\nShawna R. Chen is the editorial director of the AAPI outlet The Yappie and a breaking news reporter at Axios with a focus on race and justice. She has scooped stories on strategic political outreach to people of color in the U.S. and reported on human rights abuses around the world. Her work has appeared in Politico\, the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press\, and Palo Alto Online.
