DESCRIPTION:The Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY invites you to a special screening of Bad Press on Wednesday\, April 2\, from 5:00–7:30 p.m. This gripping documentary\, winner of the Sundance Film Festival’s U.S. Documentary Special Jury Award for Freedom of Expression\, offers a powerful look at press freedom and Indigenous politics. \nFollowing the screening\, Professor Yoruba Richen will moderate a virtual Q&A with co-directors Rebecca Landsberry-Baker\, Joe Peeler\, and journalist Angel Ellis\, whose courageous fight for a free press is at the heart of the film. \nAbout the Documentary: In 2018\, the Muscogee Nation—one of only five federally recognized tribes with a free and independent press—suddenly repealed its landmark Free Press Act\, turning its primary news source into government-controlled media. Bad Press follows journalist Angel Ellis as she takes on a historic battle against censorship and corruption in her tribal government. \nDon’t miss this thought-provoking film and conversation on the vital role of journalism in democracy. \nTo secure a ticket below\, registrants must provide their full first and last name(s)\, including for any guests.
