SUMMARY:Covering Hate: When the KKK and Neo-Nazis are the Story
DESCRIPTION:Who would have ever thought that we’d be covering demonstrations with neo-Nazis chanting “blood and soil” in 2017? \nIn the wake of Charlottesville\, U.S. journalists are brushing up on their knowledge of such groups. As journalists\, how do we ensure even-handed coverage of clashes between white nationalist and antifa groups? And how does our love of the First Amendment guide us in covering public incidents where speech may be repressed? Where does speech end and violence begin? \nThe CUNY Graduate School of Journalism and The Deadline Club\, which is the New York City chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists\, will co-host a panel about covering hate groups on Monday\, Oct. 23. There will be a reception at 6 p.m.\, followed by the panel from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The following experts will explain the long history of these conflicts in American society\, and why it matters today. \nPanelists: Sandeep Junnarkar\, Director of Interactive Journalism\, CUNY Graduate School of Journalism; Marc Lacey\, National News Editor\, The New York Times; Ryan Lenz\, Senior Investigative Reporter\, Southern Poverty Law Center;  Lee Rowland\, Senior Staff Attorney\, ACLU; Jessica Schulberg\, Foreign Affairs Reporter\, Huffington Post. \nModerator: J. DESCRIPTION:Learn the software that’s become the industry standard for video editing. \nClass meets five times from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on the following Tuesdays: September 26; October 3\, 10\, 17\, and 24. \nThe cost for this workshop is $599. \n$479 Early Bird Summer Deal until August 31st. \nAdobe Premiere is the industry standard for video editing. It is a high-performance and complex software that demands expertise and artistry. This five-week\, hands-on module is for anyone interested in learning professional video editing for storytelling. You will learn the principles of non-linear editing\, how to use the interface and features of Adobe Premiere and how to plot and edit a sequence: \n\nSession 1: Intro to non-linear editing\n\nPrinciples of non-linear editing. Overview of tools. Intro to Premiere interface. Setting up a project and importing assets. \n\nSession 2: Editing a sequence\n\nEditing commands\, source monitor\, timeline\, markers sync and track lock\, resolution. Transitions. \n\nSession 3: Advanced editing techniques\n\nSequence formats that work. Multiple cameras editing. Working with audio. Video effects. \n\nSession 4: Plotting a sequence (hands-on)\n\nStoryboarding. Assembling. Creating a look. Creating titles. \n\nSession 5: Managing your project and viewing party\n\nSaving and exporting your files. We conclude with a viewing party of the students’ work. \nWhat to Bring: Participants will be given footage to work with\, but if you have existing video you want to work on\, please bring it on an external hard drive that can plug into a Mac. You do not need to bring a laptop with the software on it\, as we will be working in a fully outfitted lab. Please bring an external hard drive to save your projects. \nLevel: Beginner to intermediate.

SUMMARY:Social Journalism Alumni Panel: Listening and Audience Engagement
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, October 25\, three former students of the M.A. in Social Journalism program will discuss how they put into practice the engagement and community-building skills they learned in school in their current jobs. \nDeron Dalton is an editor at the The Tylt\, an online debate site Advance Digital launched last year. He mobilizes and engages pop culture fans on Twitter and other platforms. While at CUNY-J\, he reported on the Black Lives Matter movement and organized an event on how journalists can improve coverage of activism. \nKatelyn Gillum is a community specialist at Meetup\, where she helps to bring groups of people together around shared interests and goals. She also helped build Wire the Wise\, an organization that enlists young professionals in training senior adults in using technology\, while at CUNY-J. \nRachel Glickhouse manages the Documenting Hate project at ProPublica\, a national effort involving multiple news organizations and universities to develop a database tracking hate crimes and bias incidents across the country. Previously\, Rachel worked at Univision\, and her social journalism work at CUNY-J involved covering immigration. \nWe welcome prospective students\, current students\, and anyone interested in social journalism and community engagement to attend the panel.
