SUMMARY:The 11th Annual Awards for Excellence
DESCRIPTION:The 11th annual Awards for Excellence\, honoring media and public service leaders\, provides scholarships for CUNY J-School students. Proceeds also enable the School to provide stipends to students with unpaid summer internships\, unique among graduate journalism programs. \nNew this year\, donors may earmark a portion of their pledge to scholarships dedicated exclusively to members of the Ida B. Wells Society for Investigative Reporting. Co-founded by Nikole Hannah-Jones and including Ta-Nehisi Coates among its board members\, IBWS was created in 2015 to increase the ranks of investigative reporters of color. \nThe Journalistic Achievement Award will be given to national correspondent for The Atlantic Ta-Nehisi Coates. He is the author of the bestselling books The Beautiful Struggle\, We Were Eight Years in Power\, and Between The World And Me\, which won the National Book Award in 2015 and was a #1 New York Times bestseller\, as well as required or recommended reading at over 400 college and universities across the country. Mr. Coates is a recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship. \nThe Distinguished Service to New York Award will be given to Julie Sandorf. She has served as President of the Charles H. Revson Foundation since January 2008. Before joining the Foundation\, Ms. Sandorf was the Co-Founder and Executive Director of Nextbook\, an organization dedicated to the creation and promotion of Jewish literature\, culture and the arts. From 1991 through 1999\, she was President of the Corporation for Supportive Housing (CSH)\, an organization she founded that worked in partnership with foundations\, nonprofits and governments to deliver permanent solutions to chronic homelessness. \nPrior to CSH\, Ms. Sandorf was a Program Director at the Local Initiatives Support Corporation\, where she forged a public-private partnership to revitalize distressed neighborhoods throughout New York City.

DESCRIPTION:The Center for Community and Ethnic Media is organizing a half-day advertising conference on Friday\, April 13 for the members of metro New York-based community and ethnic media. The conference will have a panel with representatives from four city agencies and a three-hour training on online marketing. \nRegistration is being offered on a first-come\, first-served basis. This event is only for the members of metro New York-based community and ethnic media. Please register here. \nSession 1: Understanding New York City’s Advertising Practices\, 1:00 p.m.–2:00 p.m.\nRepresentatives of city agencies will explain the policies of their agencies/departments for advertising in the community and ethnic media. They will also explain how this media can reach out to city agencies and departments to secure advertising. The topics covered during the training will include: \n\nEssentials of marketing for online publications\nHow to determine advertising rates and design media kits for online publications\nBest marketing practices and strategies\nIndustry standards for ad campaigns from mainstream advertisers\n\nPultuskier is a digital media strategist with expertise in business development\, marketing\, product development\, and new venture management\, who currently works as the Director of Digital Strategies at the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Prior to that\, he worked with NPR\, PBS\, the Institute for Nonprofit News\, the Public Radio Satellite System\, American Public Media and Public Radio International in various roles\, leading business and product development and managing top strategic lines for business including digital services\, program and member development\, and satellite/IP distribution technologies. In these roles\, he helped create revenue-generating ventures and grew business models and verticals into sustainability. \nHe earned his bachelor’s degree in Management and Systems from the Cass Business School and holds master’s degrees from the London School of Economics and Political Science and the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism.
