DESCRIPTION:The 2018 murder-suicide — a couple drove off a cliff in California with their six adopted children\, killing all in the SUV — shocked much of the nation and set off a search for answers. \nIn her new book\, “We Were Once a Family”: A Story of Love\, Death\, and Child Removal in America\,” Roxanna Asgarian ’11 tackles the tragic story — and delivers an indictment of a foster care system in which children of color can be separated from their birth parents without just cause. \nAsgarian\, now a law and courts reporter for The Texas Tribune\, returns to campus May 2 to discuss her work with “Invisible Child” author and New York Times investigative reporter Andrea Elliott\, a two-time Pulitzer Prize winner who has documented the lives of poor Americans\, Muslim immigrants and other people on the margins of power. \nThe event\, in Room 308\, will begin at 5:30pm. \nRSVP now to secure your spot \n\n\n\nJoin us for the conversation about a book The New Yorker praised as “moving and superbly reported” and Publisher’s Weekly called “sensitive\, impassioned and eye-opening.”

SUMMARY:Briefing: How to Cover Gender-Based Violence in Asian and Black Communities
DESCRIPTION:**CONTENT WARNING: This event will include discussions and descriptions of sexual assault\, abuse\, intimate partner and domestic violence\, trafficking\, and other forms of gender-based violence. Additional warnings will be provided prior to sharing any imagery or video footage.**\n  \nThe Center for Community Media’s Asian and Black Media Initiatives are holding a briefing for community media journalists and members of the Newmark J-School community on how to effectively and sensitively cover gender-based violence in Asian American and Black communities. \nAsian American and Black communities across the U.S. experience disproportionate rates of sexual assault\, domestic and intimate partner violence\, trafficking\, and other forms of gender-based violence. Many in these communities also face intersecting vulnerabilities and multiple barriers to safety and protection for victims and survivors. In-language and community-based media can serve as a vital resource for victims\, survivors and other people affected by gender-based violence in Asian American and Black communities.  \nThis news briefing\, featuring expert advocates serving Asian American and Black communities across the U.S.\, will provide community media journalists with critical information and resources to inform and support coverage of gender-based violence in their communities. Participants will receive data and statistics about gender-based violence in diverse Asian American and Black communities\, insight into intersecting legal and social issues that undergird gender-based violence in these communities\, and guidance for sensitively covering domestic violence\, sexual assault\, trafficking\, and more. \nThis is the first offering in this new joint initiative between CCM’s Asian and Black Media Initiatives aimed at expanding and deepening coverage of intimate partner violence\, sexual violence\, and other forms of gender-based violence in Black and AAPI community media. \nRegister here \nAbout the Speakers \nRebekah Duvall-Taylor\, Executive Director\, Black Women Lead: Black Femme Fund \nRebekah Duvall-Taylor is the Executive Director of Black Women Lead: Black Femme Fund\, a 501c3 nonprofit organization that offers empowerment and immediate aid to at-risk Black Women and Girls. Over the past decade\, she has dedicated herself to teaching and advocating for my community\, Through extensive research\, community service\, and organizing advancement conferences to honor and empower Black Women while shining a light on the complex and far-reaching issues we face. She has always been passionate about helping the most vulnerable members of her community: Black Women and Girls.  \nJeehae Fischer\, Executive Director\, Korean American Family Service Center \nIn 2019\, Jeehae Fischer assumed the position of Executive Director at the Korean American Family Service Center (KAFSC)\, a role she previously held as Director of Programs and Administration from 2012 to 2015. Jeehae’s association with KAFSC dates back to 2011 when she served as the Self-Sufficiency Program Coordinator\, working directly with immigrants. Prior to rejoining KAFSC\, Jeehae was the Director of Development and Communications at the Internationals Network for Public Schools\, with a focus on education for immigrant students. Jeehae is an appointed member of the Fatality Review Committee by the Mayor’s office and a member of The Mayor’s Office to End Domestic and Gender-Based Violence (ENDGBV) Advisory Committee. \nYasmeen Hamza\, CEO\, Womankind \nYasmeen Hamza is Womankind’s CEO. Prior to starting her tenure as CEO in August 2020\, she oversaw the entirety of Womankind’s Community Programs division\, which encompasses all programs and direct services. She earned her Masters of Social Work from New York University and gathered a breadth of experience in working with both survivors of domestic violence on intervention and prevention over the past 15 years. She joined Womankind in 2012 as the Assistant Director of Client Services and was promoted to Director of Client Services in 2014\, before becoming CEO. \nZainab Muzaffar\, Sakhi for South Asian Women \nZainab Muzaffar is the Senior Associate Director of Communications and Development at Sakhi for South Asian Women\, where she is responsible for developing and executing the organization’s communication strategy. A new member of the Sakhi team\, Zainab builds and maintains relationships with external partners and the media to uplift and center survivors\, engage in advocacy\, and raise awareness of critical issues surrounding gender-based violence in the South Asian community. Before joining Sakhi\, Zainab leveraged her expertise in growth and marketing strategies to successfully establish and expand brands in new markets. Zainab is the founder and current Board Co-Chair of The Citizens Foundation\, New York Chapter. \nShenikqwa Phillip\, Black Women in Motion \nShenikqwa Phillip’s passions are serving her community and creating constructive and accessible spaces for Black youth. In her current role as Program Manager at Black Women in Motion\, she oversees the effective planning and implementation of the Black Peer Education Network\, a project dedicated to creating healthier and safer learning spaces for Black youth to collectively work through dismantling and challenging rape culture and sexual violence within the black community. \n\nAbout the Collaboration \nCCM’s Asian and Black Media Initiatives are pleased to announce this first collaborative effort to bring Black and AAPI community media journalists together to dismantle barriers they face in covering this major and underreported issue affecting both communities. Through this collaboration\, BMI and AMI seek to:  \n\nbring expert advocates supporting Asian American and Black survivors of gender-based violence into conversation with community media journalists working in and on behalf of both communities;\nshare reporting tools and resources with community media journalists\nand work with Asian American and Black community journalists to expand and deepen their coverage of gender-based violence.
