SUMMARY:From Democracy to Dictatorship: How to Cover Conflict and Crisis
DESCRIPTION:A Master Class with Mikhail Zygar\nCo-sponsored by the Journalism Protection Initiative and the International Reporting Concentration \nRussian journalist Mikhail Zygar began his career as a war correspondent\, later founded the independent new outlet TV Rain to challenge the Kremlin narrative\, and today is a bestselling author chronicling President Vladmir Putin’s imperial regime. Through it all\, he has witnessed Russia’s transition from a flawed democracy to an authoritarian state. In a four-part Master Class\, featuring some of the top journalists covering Russia today\, Mikhail will share his experience with the Newmark J-School community.  \nThe Master Class is limited to 25 participants and is open to Newmark J-School students and outside guests. Zygar is the Newmark J-School’s inaugural Press Freedom Fellow. \nOn February 21\, Zygar will be in conversation with Julia Ioffe to discuss the Putin phenomenon. Ioffe\, formerly Moscow correspondent for The New Yorker\, serves as Puck’s Washington correspondent and is a frequent commentator on Russia for CNN. They’ll discuss the role of TV Rain\, the independent media organization by Zygar\, and also how to cover Putin for a U.S. audience\, how the perception of Russia’s dictatorship has changed in the U.S.\, and why Americans should be concerned about rising authoritarianism.

According to Axios\, U.S. elections-related advertising is projected to reach approximately $16 billion. \nLocal\, community and ethnic media in US cities are gearing up to claim a fair share of local political ad dollars. Amidst the tensions and pressures of decision-making involving candidates\, campaigns and their advertising plans\, community media organizations need to operate with ethical guidelines\, editorial integrity\, and fairness. \nThis 1.5-hour training will encompass the ethics of political advertising\, covering crucial areas.
