SUMMARY:From Democracy to Dictatorship: How to Cover Conflict and Crisis
DESCRIPTION:A Master Class with Mikhail Zygar\nCo-sponsored by the Journalism Protection Initiative and the International Reporting Concentration \nRussian journalist Mikhail Zygar began his career as a war correspondent\, later founded the independent new outlet TV Rain to challenge the Kremlin narrative\, and today is a bestselling author chronicling President Vladmir Putin’s imperial regime. Through it all\, he has witnessed Russia’s transition from a flawed democracy to an authoritarian state. In a four-part Master Class\, featuring some of the top journalists covering Russia today\, Mikhail will share his experience with the Newmark J-School community. \nThe Master Class is limited to 25 participants and is open to Newmark J-School students and outside guests. Zygar is the Newmark J-School’s inaugural Press Freedom Fellow. \nOn March 13\, Zygar will be in conversation with Simon Shuster\, Time magazine’s longtime correspondent in Russia and Ukraine. They’ll discuss reporting during times of crisis and war\, and Shuster’s new book\, “The Showman\,” about Volodymyr Zelensky’s rise to leadership. Distinguished Professor Masha Gessen (Newmark J-School) will attend and participate in the discussion.

SUMMARY:Black Media Futures
DESCRIPTION:Organized by the Center for Community Media’s Black Media Initiative\, Black Media Futures is a half-day virtual conference that aims to explore the current state and future prospects of Black media. The conference will feature a range of expert speakers and panelists who will share their insights and perspectives on the past\, present\, and future of Black media. \nThis event will be held on Mar 14\, 2024\, in celebration of the 197th birthday of the Black press. ​​​​​ \nSessions\n\n1:00-1:50: The Black Vote – Shaping Democracy’s Future: This keynote will feature insights on the key issues and trends that will shape the upcoming election cycle\, and the vital role that Black media plays in informing and empowering the Black community.\n2:00 – 2:55: Reparations for Black Media: This session will explore the urgent and vital topic of funding for Black media. A panel of experts and practitioners will discuss the historical and contemporary challenges faced by Black media outlets\, the opportunities and strategies to secure sustainable and equitable funding\, and the moral and political case for reparations for Black media as a form of justice and empowerment.\n3:00 – 3:55: Leveraging AI for Impact: In this panel\, we’ll explore how Black media professionals are harnessing the power of artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance their workflows\, streamline processes\, and save valuable time. Our expert speakers will share practical tips and insights on integrating AI tools effectively into their daily routines. Whether you’re a journalist\, content creator\, or media manager\, this session will provide actionable strategies to optimize your work.\n4:00 – 4:30: Freelancer Networking Session: This session is designed to foster connections and collaborations between Black freelancers and Black media leaders. It is an opportunity for freelancers who are part of the Black media freelance directory to showcase their skills and pitch their ideas to influential editors\, producers and publishers. Participants will be able to exchange contacts and feedback\, as well as learn from the experiences and insights of the media leaders.\n\nSee speaker bios here. DESCRIPTION:An audio talk at Newmark J-School featuring\, Mitra Kaboli live in conversation with Jess Shane\, host and creator of Heartbreaking\, Shocking\, Transformative \nAcclaimed audio documentarians Jess Shane and Mitra Kaboli will dive into the thorny nature of documentary and the creative and ethical challenges of working in narrative audio amidst the current appetite for compelling personal stories. The evening will start with a short listening portion with excerpts of Shane’s recent series Heartbreaking\, Shocking\, Transformative followed by discussion and Q&A. \nJess Shane is an artist and documentarian from Toronto. Her work has played at film and audio festivals internationally including Prismatic Ground\, Hearsay\, and Open City Documentary Festival. In 2023\, Jess was a recipient of The Howard G. Buffett Fund for Women Journalists from the International Women’s Media Foundation She is the co-founder of the independent podcast Constellations. Jess holds an MFA from Hunter College and teaches film and media studies at Hunter College and Pratt Institute. \nMitra Kaboli is an award-winning audio documentarian and multimedia artist who has been working professionally in podcasting since 2012. Her work has been featured on The Heart\, ESPN’s 30 for 30 and countless other outlets. Most recently\, she was the host and producer of the critically-acclaimed podcast Welcome to Provincetown. \n
