SUMMARY:From Democracy to Dictatorship: How to Cover Conflict and Crisis
DESCRIPTION:A Master Class with Mikhail Zygar\nCo-sponsored by the Journalism Protection Initiative and the International Reporting Concentration \nRussian journalist Mikhail Zygar began his career as a war correspondent\, later founded the independent new outlet TV Rain to challenge the Kremlin narrative\, and today is a bestselling author chronicling President Vladimir Putin’s imperial regime. Through it all\, he has witnessed Russia’s transition from a flawed democracy to an authoritarian state. In a four-part Master Class\, featuring some of the top journalists covering Russia today\, Mikhail will share his experience with the Newmark J-School community. Zygar is the Newmark J-School’s inaugural Press Freedom Fellow. \nIn the final class\, Zygar will speak with Christo Grozev\, the renowned Bulgarian investigative journalist whose efforts to expose the 2020 assassination attempt against Alexei Navalny were featured in the Academy Award-winning documentary. Grozev is a leader in open-source investigations\, using social media and other electronic signals\, which he pioneered at Bellingcat. Today he works for The Insider\, an online investigative outlet based in Riga\, Latvia. \nThe session is co-sponsored by RIMA\, the Russian Independent Media Archive\, and will include Anna Nemzer\, a member of RIMA’s founding team and a journalist and documentary filmmaker.
