DESCRIPTION:Instructors: \n\nJohn Smock\, Director of Photojournalism at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY\nParis M. Brown\, Associate Publisher\, The Baltimore Times\n\nAI presents possibilities and obstacles for community journalism. Within this evolving landscape\, newsrooms have opportunities to use AI to optimize and enhance newsroom work and editorial content.  However\, alongside these developments\, the proliferation of disinformation\, misinformation\, and fake content is on the rise. \nThis 90-minute training session aims to examine how newsrooms can ethically use AI-generated visuals while also keeping issues and risks in mind. \nThe session will cover the following topics: \n\nHands-on and practical instruction on how to begin to introduce visual AI tools into your newsroom.\nCase studies about how other publications\, especially community publications\, are using visual AI tools.\nEthical and professional guidelines for using visual AI tools\, most notably around topics like elections\, protests and other sensitive material.\nTools and tips for verifying the veracity of visuals for your readers.\nWhat’s next? How do you “future proof” your publication in such a rapidly changing media space?\n\nThis training has been developed by the Center for Community Media at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY\, and is funded by the New York City Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment. If you have any questions\, contact ccm@journalism.cuny.edu. \nRegister for the AI visuals training \n\nJohn Smock is the Director of Photojournalism at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY. Before taking the position at Newmark\, Smock was a photographer with the Associated Press and SIPA Press\, a photo agency with offices in New York City and Paris. Since joining the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism he has expanded his expertise into social video and animations for news. Smock has worked as a journalism trainer in several former Soviet Republics\, Cambodia\, Libya and Afghanistan. He continues to work on grant-based visual projects on a range of topics and on a range of platforms. \nParis M. Brown\, Associate Publisher of The Baltimore Times\, leverages her 20+ years of business development expertise to drive digital innovation and revenue growth. Under her guidance\, the newspaper has seen increased digital revenue and audience engagement through integrated solutions and strategic campaigns. Brown uses technology effectively\, exploring AI for non-editorial use and VR and AR for storytelling\, content creation and audience interaction. She also innovates by marketing newspaper boxes as billboards and strengthening partnerships\, making the newspaper a pivotal media partner for major city-wide events. Serving on the National Newspaper Publishers Association National Marketing Committee and MACPA Board of Directors and promoting community-focused initiatives\, Brown fosters strong community ties and a positive impact.
