DESCRIPTION:Panelists \n\nPaola Jaramillo\, Enlace Latino NC\nMacollvie Neel\, The Haitian Times\nMónica Pirela\, NotiVisión Georgia\n\n\nThe Center for Community Media’s Latino Media Initiative invites news leaders to a 60-minute virtual forum exploring how Latino media organizations are evolving and adapting to today’s challenges. \nThis forum will showcase journalism produced in the last past year and examine the challenges and emerging opportunities in the field. Publishers\, editors\, and independent journalists: your voices and experiences are crucial to this conversation. \nKey topics include: \n\nCurrent approaches to audience engagement and funding models\nThe Latino news sector’s core strengths and areas for growth\nSolutions for navigating financial pressures and editorial demands\nPractical strategies for team support\, reporting\, and technology adaptation\n\nThe forum will be held via Zoom in both Spanish and English. If you do not receive a confirmation email after registering or if you have any questions about the event\, email the Center for Community Media at ccm@journalism.cuny.edu. \nRegister for “How the Latino news media is serving its communities” \n\nPanelists \nPaola Jaramillo is co-founder and executive director of Enlace Latino NC\, North Carolina’s first Spanish-language nonprofit digital news outlet. Born in Colombia\, this social communicator-journalist’s innovative leadership has earned over 24 national awards from the National Association of Hispanic Publications (NAHP). As a passionate advocate for service journalism\, Jaramillo is transforming how Latino communities access information\, creating spaces that empower through well-written stories and crucial resources for informed decision-making. \nMacollvie J. Neel is a journalist and communications consultant focused on elevating Black and immigrant voices in media spaces and workplaces. As Special Projects Editor with The Haitian Times\, Macollvie leads narrative features\, investigations and select community collaborations that delve into the diaspora group’s most impactful subjects\, challenges\, and opportunities. In 2024\, she was awarded the New York Association of Black Journalists’ Ida B. Wells Award for coverage of a $250 million pyramid scam that ensnared more than 25\,000 people in the Haitian community. \nMónica Pirela is a Venezuelan journalist dedicated to empowering Georgia’s Hispanic community through impactful storytelling. To close information gaps in Central Georgia’s Latino communities\, Pirela founded NotiVisión Georgia in 2019. Last year\, her team launched a bilingual newspaper\, distributing 5\,000 copies monthly. In June 2024\, NotiVisión Georgia won an Emmy Award for a compelling story on domestic violence. That same year\, The City of Macon honored NotiVisión Georgia by proclaiming September 21st as “NotiVisión Day”\, celebrating its contributions to the community and its vital role in keeping audiences informed. The City of Warner Robins awarded the platform a Community Impact Honor\, while the cities of Perry and Centerville also recognized its ongoing commitment to serving the Hispanic population. Beyond digital journalism\, Mónica has expanded her influence in radio to ensure that Spanish-speaking audiences stay informed through multiple platforms. \nAbout CCM and the Latino Media Initiative \nThe Center for Community Media at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism serves news organizations that provide essential local coverage for populations whose voices and issues are underrepresented in mainstream media. The Center serves as a hub of information\, resources\, and training aimed at increasing the sustainability of the local news media sector. Its Latino Media Initiative focuses on supporting Latino news media makers\, community media entrepreneurs and Latino-centered newsrooms with capacity building\, direct investment\, sector analysis and business development programs.
