SUMMARY:AI for Community Media: AI Tools for Journalists | Image Creation
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Mike Reilley\, Senior Lecturer at University of Illinois Chicago and founder of JournalistsToolbox.ai \nAI Tools for Journalists (60 minutes): \nClaude\, Perplexity\, ChatGPT\, Google Gemini\, Midjourney and other tools. During this hands-on session\, we’ll explore what these tools can do well (help with headlines\, writing tips\, summarization\, photo illustrations) and what they do poorly (write stories\, accuracy\, etc.) and discuss legal and ethical ramifications of using them. We’ll explore many AI tools from JournalistsToolbox.ai as well. Participants will get a handout with tips\, prompts and other resources as well as free resources on Journalist’s Toolbox.ai. \nImage Creation (60 minutes): \nWe’ll work with – and modify – prompts to create images. We’ll also look at how to fact-check images to see if they’re created by AI (some new tools and techniques here). We’ll look at how tools like Midjourney have improved image quality over the past 18 months. We’ll work with DALL-E\, Adobe Firefly and other tools. \nThis session is the third of three AI for Community Media sessions organized and developed by the Center for Community Media. If you have any questions\, contact ccm@journalism.cuny.edu. \nRegister for Session 3 \n\nInstructor \nMike Reilley is the author of two books\, “Data + Journalism: A Story-Driven Approach to Learning Data Reporting” and “Journalist’s Toolbox: A Guide to Digital Reporting and AI”. Mike teaches data and digital journalism courses at the University of Illinois Chicago. He is also a digital tools trainer who has taught Google News Initiative tools to more than 12\,500 journalists and educators in the past seven years. He also is the founder of Penny Press Digital LLC\, a digital consulting and training company that works with media outlets such as USA Today. A former reporter and copy editor at the LA Times and a founding editor of ChicagoTribune.com\, Mike served for 13 years as a full-time faculty member at Northwestern\, Arizona State University and DePaul University. He holds journalism degrees from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Northwestern University. Mike founded the research site The Journalist’s Toolbox AI.
