DESCRIPTION:For decades\, persecuted journalists found refuge in the U.S. through fellowships and temporary stays. Today\, restrictive visa policies and mounting pressures are reshaping that reality. Journalists from across the globe will share their experiences in this off-the-record conversation. \nPanelists \n\nGustavo Gorriti – Investigative journalist from Peru\, director of IDL-Reporteros\, known for exposing government corruption; currently a Knight Press Freedom Fellow.\nYasmine El Rashidi – Egyptian journalist and writer (joining via Zoom from Cairo)\, contributing writer\, New York Review of Books\nBaktygul Chynybaeva – journalist from Kyrgyzstan\, specializing in human rights\, and former correspondent with Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty\nMikhail Zygar – journalist\, historian\, and best-selling author\, known for his work on Russian politics\, propaganda\, and authoritarianism\nModerated by Joel Simon – Executive Director of the Journalism Protection Initiative\n\nThe Safety Series \nThis event is part of the Fall 2025 Safety Series\, a three-part program from the Newmark J-School’s Journalism Protection Initiative exploring the biggest threats to media safety and press freedom in the U.S. Covering topics including shifting immigration policy; global declines in press freedom; the precarity of safe havens; and dangers to trans and non-binary journalists\, each session highlights urgent issues while offering space to share experiences\, strategies and solutions.

But AI needs to be wielded carefully and correctly to get accurate\, trustable results in storytelling. \nJoin Sandeep Junnarkar\, Data Journalism Director at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY\, for a three-part training series on using AI to find and analyze data to help you produce strong\, high-quality stories for your audience. Junnarkar will be joined by Jere Hester\, director of the J-School’s Local Accountability Reporting program\, at these trainings. \nHow to find and access relevant data\nThursday\, Oct. 9 @ 2 pm – 3:30 pm ET\nLearn how to locate relevant data sets. At Bloomberg\, he trains journalists in data journalism and advises on data projects. In 2019\, he received a Knight Foundation AI ethics grant to help community journalists examine AI’s impact on immigrants and low-income groups. He co-created YOU ARE HERE\, an AR storytelling app\, and launched The Hate Index\, tracking post-2016 hate incidents. He’s also developing PathChartr\, a tool for personalized news delivery. Junnarkar holds degrees from UC Berkeley and Columbia Journalism School.
